Default Lewis River?

I noticed a few boats at the mouth of the Lewis today, are they catching steelhead or salmon?

My girlfriend lives very close to Mt St. Helens, right where the waters of the lewis begin. I just smoked a 20 lb chinook for her son who got the fish at the meat hole (upper Lewis hatchery) on Sunday. This kid lives for fishing, has way more free time to fish than any of us, and so he is dialed into the Lewis...Here is what he is telling me and what I am hearing from other people native to the area.

The locals cannot believe all the steelhead that are in right now, or how early more than just a few fish have made it up the river. The mouth of the Lewis has lots and lots and lots of early summers. In two weeks from now the Lewis should be hotter than it has been in a very long time. Apparently there is a fair number of chinook still entering as well. I am planning a visit to the mouth within the next few days to check it out for myself...will advise. I've heared rumors about a NINE fish limit come the Coho run, which is not too far out there considering last year it was six.

At this moment, there is no shortage of still bright or bright-grey chinook in the meat hole, and they are pushing the early steelies into shallow water and seams...probably a good place to go if you missed Mr. Spottytail on the Columia this year.... think maybe I'll hit it with my lonely fly rod Thursday afternoon and see how frisky the new fish are.

Hey Thumper,
Would you like to get together in the next few weeks and try for those summers near the mouth? Let me know and I'll give you a call.
