Default Classic Equipment In-Service

In our throw-away society, not much of anything actually puts in 'years' of service anymore. I am as guilty as anyone, with a ever growing collection of graphite, shiney reels and cutting edge lures. I'm always using the 'new' stuff and shelving the old.

* There are 2 old boys that fish the Kalama each year in a traditonal wooden boat. Their rods are the traditonal boat rods of the 1940's, only about 4' long. One fella uses a level wind that is beautiful. This chrome finished Phlueger(?) has a handle that spins with the drag and on free spool, yet the owner casts it like its a new Calcutta. The old stuff doesn't seem to hurt their success, either!

Do you have a classic fishing implement that you still put to work daily?

As a cheapass, heck yeah.
Actually, most of my stuff is older, but not old enough to be classic. Just inherited. I guess the main one would be my depthfinder. Its one of the old Lowrance whirlygiggers in a little green box. You unlatch it, open her up, and plug in the 'ducer. Runs on two 6 volts and sits on the floor of my boat. No, it doesn't work every bit as well as a new one, at least not the way I use it, but hey the price is right. Got two other dash mounts of the same style, but older, that I have been fiddling with repairing. Anybody know anyone who is into the old depth finders? I would like to find out if there is any point in restoring them. They would go great with my 1962 boat!!

One of my old infamous tools is a hand- carved, wooden, topwater plug that I carve myself. When I'm feeling traditional, I'll carve one up and fish with it. Kinda cool feeling.

I do the same thing that hey-yall does. I tie classic atlantic salmon flies with twisted gut eyes and fish them on my spey rod just to feel all traditional like. I also use a double barrel Lafever shotgun from the 20's while I hunt birds. Sometimes I use the spin-n-glos I inhereted from my great grandad plunking.

Even with all of our modern "improvements" in tackle and electronics, it's nice to know that the fish haven't gotten any smarter, and the same old classic lures will still catch them.

Oh yah, I use old Dee patterns for the searuns and old atlantic salmon patterns too. Stuff still works---Great! Fish with the Heddon 8.5ft #14 rod. Thats a blast. Kind of slows you down a bit to really feel the moment. Old stuff is GREAT!

I have a set of flys that were literally tied onto the leaders.Look to be Atlantic Salmon patterns. Displayed in a classic box from the 1930's... it would be a trip down Avenue-Nostalgia to use them for steelhead, but, I'm afraid to get 'em wet.

For spring salmon, my dad still swears by his, pre WWII brass spinner blade and a red feather over the treble; all built on a stainless leader that is actually part of the spreader.

...the fish don't seem to have gotten any smarter!

I have recently come across a very vintage fishing thing I really like to fish with. I cannot say I have caught many fish with it, but like all old things, it is fun to go out and fish with. It is kind of hard to describe, It is about 6 feet long. It is bigger in diameter than any other pole I have ever seen. It is not graphite, since it was made way before graphite poles have been around. It doesnt seem to be made of glass either, I would guess it to be carbon based. Doesnt come with a reel seat or any method of attaching a reel that I can figure out. It isnt bright like a new chrome spinner blade either. Shows a lot of boat rash, and I mean a lot of boat rash around the edges. I am sure it needs a little oil since it makes a lot of noise when I have it in the boat. It doesnt catch a lot of fish either I can tell it would like to, but it just doesnt seem to have the sensitivity to feel the bite like a newer version of the same thing. If you get a chance to fish with one, do it. It is a lot of fun, but you wont catch many fish.

I dont know what to call this thing but what it goes by, GIZMO MAN.

On my spey rod I use a 1915 (aproximately) Hardy Perfect wide spool. This great reel has the capacity I need and no other reel sounds as good as a fish is peeling line.

Being frugal and/or parsimonious ( I have been known to holler at kids to take off their glasses if they weren't looking at anything, I turn the stove off when I flip the bacon) I seem to shop garage sales for fishing gear. After the purchase ( and the long, drawn out dickering) I always would clean up the item and try to catch a fish with it. I have caught steelhead on a 5 foot metal pole (with the pistol grip) with a Bronson Green Hornet direct drive reel and had a hay day after work one night catching 5 chinook with a Shakespear direct drive and an old wright mcgill. My thumb still twitches when I think about it. Took the skin down to the cells that existed when I was 5 years old.
Makes you understand why they invented graphite and shimano's.
