Gamehide, good or bad?
How many have used Gamehide brand Waterproof coats? Are they really waterproof, or resistant, how does it compare to Gortex? Fishermans has a good deal on them right now.
Thanks,
Daryn

I have one i got from bi-mart a few years ago. Lightweight, very good for deer season, easy to pack around. Spray with camp dry and it will float:grin:

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I have 2 GameHide heavy waterfowl coats and they are awesome!! In the last year or so (they're about 5 years old now) they've been starting to lose some of their water water proofing, but a little camp dry fixes that
As far as keeping warm in a duck blind...i've never been cold once! I usually have a t-shirt with a sweatshirt on top of that, underneath the coat. More often than not, i'm a little warmer than what I like, but not cold! And i've been in some cold, heavy downpours last season
Get one with the removable liner when you do get one.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I think they're great for the money, but I would suggest ordering a size larger than you normally would, as they seem to run a little small.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I bought a jacket 5 or 6 years ago.Its been awesome.Light, warm, and dry.Its starting to let a little dampness in now.I'm going to give it another shot of campdry. If that dont work I'll buy a new 1.
The pants on the other hand, sucked.Worked about as well as a pair of jeans.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I hunt a lot of blacktails in the late archery season and I was not impressed with my jacket. I really put my clothing to the test. The fabric was wonderful but the zippers leaked badly. Especially the one on the back for a vent. I was soaked all of the way through. Food for thought.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
DTS - not saying anything bad about Gamehide as i don't have much personal experience with them. seem like a good coat.
check out Drake Waterfowl's clearance items from WingSupply. it will run you more than the 100 bucks, but not much. and the Drake stuff is pretty darn good for waterproof/windproof and not being terribly bulky.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I actually wear my columbia jacket, i bought it in a neutral color,it is waterproof and warm. I use it for elk hunting and late season deer hunting.
I have a gamehide coat and i sweat like a ***** in church... In my columbia i can walk run hike and i will still be dry.
Now granted my columbia is not camo, but it has not hindered my ability to get close to animals...

Buy it! You won't be sorry. I've had one for about 5 years and it has been great. I wash it every year at the end of duck season. The Timex of waterfowl coats.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
Keep an eye on the clearance section at Sportsman's. I picked up a Columbia Omni-Tech full camo parka with removable liner and quick load shell holders last year for $75. Great jacket so far.

Drake's stuff is basically the same as the RW jackets. they both use a tightly woven microfleece. when i bought my drake i was actually out for RW, but since i was using it as a waterfolwing jacket exclusively, the Drake jacket was a lot more functional in that as it was designed specifically for waterfowler's use. everything is where a duck hunter would want it to be.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
If your moving around much. And its above 55 or 60 degrees the Rivers West gets very warm.
I got as wet sweating in it last Oct as I did from the rain previously.
To me RW is definite cold weather gear.
My Gamehide was the light jacket.

Without having it on hand to look at I have to say it was the H2O jacket series that they put out last fall. Heavy "Rivers West" type material but no lining or insulation.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I have a Gamehide quad wader jacket. 7 or 8 years of use and it works fine for me. The liner makes a good early season jacket as well..
I am hunting east though, not a lot of rain but some and very cold conditions. As jokester said, don't need alot of clothes underneath. I wear a camo longsleeve undershirt and stay plenty warm.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I don't have much experience with Gamehide waterfowl jackets, but I do have a few of their other products and have been happy with them.
For waterfowl, I have a few things I use. Early season I have a Drake Equator MTS Deluxe Quarter Zip with the hood. This is really a great jacket for early-mid season without a lot of bulk. I use it most of the time up to early December. If it is a day that feels like you are hunting in a carwash....like a hard rain all day, you will start to get wet in the Drake.
I also have a Columbia 3-in-1 Omni-Tec Widgon jacket with the quick loader tubes. This is also a great jackt and very warm. I have never worn the liner by itself because as you know here in Oregon we tend to hunt in the rain most of the time...LOL. I have worn the shell by itself but if it is that warm, I tend to go with the Drake Jacket unless it is a downpour day. On the really cold break ice days or really snotty wet days it's Columbia all the way.
The Columbia retails for like $200+ but I got mine at the Columbia Factory Outlet Store in Lake O on sale for like $70. Keep an eye out at the factory stroes in Sellwood or LO. It really was a great find and they do it every year....in the summer too.

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I have had a Gamehide pull over for about 5 years.
My first comment would be, "I didnt know Game Hide made a waterproof jacket".
But to be fair none of the suposedly breathable waterproof fabrics I have tried were any good for anything but a light mist.
If you keep it coated with Camp Dry or one of the Goretex Renew products it will work as good as any of the more expensive gear as far as keeping water out is concerned.
Me personaly I like the Drake early season jacket (about $90). It also needs the silicone treatment but its great for warm days and I can wear some fleece underneath for cold days.

My question is, If you have to spray a waterproof product with camp dry is it really waterproof ?

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
Thanks for help everyone, after all that I got a smokin deal on a Drake MST, so I didn't buy the Gamehide. I'll let the cat out of the bag though Fishermans is who is selling them for $100, only a few left (max4 & Mossyoak).

Re: Gamehide, good or bad?
I know you already bought something, but unless you're going to buy rubber its hard to beat the gamehides for the money. I have two sets so I always have a dry set when I head out of camp.
