Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
The delima (kinda). Would you sell a gun in order to buy a good tuna reel? I've thought of doing so and here are the pros and cons
Pros
1) A new Avet 2 speed reel would be awesome for reeling in the tuna
2) A new TLD 2 speed would be awesome for reeling in tuna
3) I use a fishing reel much more than I use a gun
Cons
1) Reels wear out
2) Reels have low resale value
3) Over time quality guns retain their value
4) It's a gun, it's like a child, how can I get rid of it
5) I still have regrets from selling a gun that I wish I still had
6) The reels I currently have does the job

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
Rick,
Give a little more info. What kind of gun? Do you use the gun? Did you acquire the gun from a beloved one now hunting the big duck blind in the sky? Is it a rare or hard to find gun?
As someone who is has newly been introduced to the CRACK OF FISHING...if the above info is pretty vanilla....I would do it in a heartbeat!
As you know, tuna fishing is freaking addicting and such a rush!!!!

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
Not me. No way Jose. A 2 speed is absolutely not required for fishing tuna around these parts, it's overkill by a long ways. I have two. I shift them into low gear just about never. Think hard about why you want them. Because the wierdos at the bait shop say you need one? Only if you are going to start doing some long range trips, and then you might need to sell more than one gun.
You might use a fishing reel often, but really how many tuna trips a year? 10? I bet no more than that year in, year out.

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
That is a tuff question, I spend far more time chasing fish than feathers and fur I look at my fishin gear everyday, I have guns I have not looked a in 10 years.
I don't think I would sell a gun to by a reel, I would hate myself later on for doing so.
So, what do you have to sell

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
I caution you against listening to Headhunter as he is in the throws of the TUNA! madness. He's just talking plain silly right now.
I would side with those that say no. You yourself listed more cons that pros, and two of your pros were just dreams of having nice reels.
You should never have stepped aboard that first tuna boat. You're ruined.

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
NO!...... IP, don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guns are FOREVER!
RESIST THE DARK SIDE.
Penn 320/321's are a dime a doz...the TUNA don't know the diff.
2sp not required. And any good 4/0 Senator w/ a power handle can do hali at 750ft.
And the Quantum 1420/1421 will make an excellent TUNA caster.

I wonder what caused that
It's the power of the dark side.
I posted this on the hunting board because I knew I could get unbiased opinions here. Thanks for the sanity, I will just have to tough out another tuna season and make that decission in the off season.

Sell a gun to buy a new tuna reel? No.
To buy a new Sage 5wt fly rod? Maybe.

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
i might not be the guy to answer your question! but just because you might want to sell a gun to buy this new reel, dosn't mean the gun will sell. now if you already have a buyer, just draw a fun meter graph and put your hunting/shooting with this gun on one scale and the tuna fishing on the other. your answer will be pretty clear

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
if it was a gun i really didn't need/want/use and i had a strong need for the reel i was going to get?
sure...i swap out old gear i don't use for stuff i will use all the time. a gun is just another piece of gear. it isn't doing you any good collecting dust in a closet, cabinet, or safe.
this is all making the assumption that this gun isn't some sort of family heirloom or special collectors piece that will appreciate monetarily or sentimentally over time.

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
Irish,I think posting this question in the hunting area is biased,I wonder what response you'd get in the salty dogs section?
A couple years ago i'd say i'd never sell a gun for a reel, but after fishing tuna,I might change my opinion

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
IP,
I would post up on the SaltyDog board asking if the TUNA guys would sell a reel to buy a gun....just to see what they say...
I do agree with Marshbum that I am caught up in the fever of TUNA right now and my not be thinking clearly, but I also don't have the same deep attachment to guns as many on this board. Like SwampPuppy said...it's just another peice of gear unless it holds some meaning or is rare.

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
I have sold some guns to add to my horde of TUNA! fishing gear.
I got out the fun meter, and there was no comparison. Had not shot them for years, and my daughters don't ever want to borrow them, so why not.
But this house is still better armed than most I will wager.

Re: Would you sell a gun to buy a reel
if it won't affect your hunting, sell it, it's just a gun, did you carry it for nine months or ween it off blackpowder? unless you shot your biggest animal ever with it or it was handed down to you it should not have that much sentimental value, just my opinion, i guess us bowhunters aren't as emotional as you rifle guys

Not that I advocate for selling guns for any reason, but so are Remington 870s (and my Winchester Model 1200 that I never use). (not quite the same category though)
By the way, my Penn 321GTI lasted exactly two live bait trips last September before it gave up the ghost. Smoked, literally.
