Default Where to Go for ASTORIA Salmon come July 1

First of all I want to say, Hey thanks! to all those who told me where to and how to for the Newport opener this weekend. In 4 hours, we hooked 12 landed 10 and were able to keep 8. 7 Silvers and one Chinook. (Lost two chinook at the boat) Didnt matter what we used for bait just like all of you said. Now I am seeking the same type of advice for the Astoria area. How far out do I need to go before I can fish? Also for all you sled owners out there, how rough is too rough when it comes to 18 - 20 foot sleds on the ocean? It was a little rough going out to the rock pile on saturday the 23rd.

B.down , pretty bumpy ride out to the pile on saturday , indeed. We took my buddies 23' Trophy which always works real slick ...if I were in my 19' NR I may have stayed closer that day . Last couple of years the coho seem to get closer in as the season goes. I usually will start fishing at around 165' which is around 4 miles out I think. They can be thick in there just like at the pile .

The CR bouy is about five miles out and a little south. One trick to remember about the bar stay in the channel most of the way out there are some shollow ploaces on the oregon side. once you start to see the south jetty bear south and try and hit the bar about 1/4 mile off the south jetty tip. That way you are catching a minimal part of the bar. The jetty will protect you some if you stay close (1/4 mile). A friend of mine uses his 19' alumaweld regularily. It is a piece of cake to find out where to go. If you are going out on Sunday look us up. 22' Searay.
leaving at 5 A. M.

Hey Bobberdown, check out the 'Bar Crossing' post from last August. You don't need to go all the way to CR.

Silvers are good
