Default lava lake

Recently I have heard many good reports about lava lake. I think most people have been catching good size rainbows, but I was hoping to hook up with a brook trout. Many people have told me the brook trout are as large as 10 pounds. Is that true? Any info is greatly appreciated on hot spots, or suggestion for lures. I'm leaving EARLY Tuesday morning so please give me info ASAP!

Thanks,
Adam

Hey --- I have been fishing the Lava lakes for many years now. Big Lava Lake is predominately a "still fishing" fishery. However, we always do real well for the rainbows trolling.
As for the Brook trout, I have only caught a handfull of brookies trolling. I have never seen a 10lb. brook come out of Lava, however I have pulled out several 3-5lb fish flyfishing. The Brook trout population isn't great, but they are there. Just need to know where and what to use. If you are into flyfishing, I can tell you more about that fishery, just let me know and I'll email you back with the details.
Later..

Some friends of mine caught something like 44 fish up there this last weekend (kept about a dozen). I've never fished there, but ...

10 lbs is remarkably huge for a brookie, isn't it? Are there browns up there?

No browns. Just rainbows and brookies.

I as at Lava Lake about 1 1/2 weeks ago and saw several nice Brook Trout that were caught. Most of the Brookies were ranging between 16-22" Several of the folks who were fishing for them caught them on Power Bait. I did talk with one gentlemen who had caught a couple of Brookies trolling along the weed beds. We fished for 2 days and caught our limits in Rainbows. I found the fishing to be very quick as most of the limits in our boat were caught within 2 hours. This was taking in account releasing all the trout that were unharmed. The Rainbows averaged between 12-15" and were nice and fat. We went over to Wickiup orginally for Kokes but were discouraged by the poor fishing reports and large masses of people. Well it's time to set the sites on Coho and Chinook and forget about those trout

Yes - 10lbs is HUGE for a brookie. The stae record brookie came out of the Deschutes Headwaters (just out of Little Lava) - 9lbs+ back in the mid-80's, I think.
