I need a new ISP - nonfishing
I need a new ISP provider. I had teleport. They were a local portland based company, bought out by onemain.com and then earthlink and it reeeely sucks now. I can't even get my email out of them.
Does anyone have a reasonably priced dial-up ISP that has an unlimited account for less than $30.00 per month with at least 2 email addresses.
I'M DESPERATE HELP!!!!

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
my brother has had earthlink up here for a few years now. He dials into the Tacoma numbers. Within the last few months I guess it has really gone down hill. Sounds like it's turning into another AOL. I remember the ups and downs of them.
I've got cable access with a small town provider. I love it. They have a storefront a mile down the road that I an drop my money off at. Call a little further up the road and talk to a local person if I have any problems.
They can keep their big ISP's, I'm gonna stick to the small town ones from now on.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
Hey 'Skip, the 2 most used ISP's are AOL and MSN. They are around $24 per month and have more than one e-mail box. They have occassional probs too, but not as bad as it sounds like Teleport has gotten. As for AT&T cable net, it's much faster and a little more consistent, but I have occassional trouble with the mail - didn't get a few and a few didn't get delivered; and it now cost $35 a month (ouch). DSL is the best dial-up type of ISP, but I don't know what they cost.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
I can't believe anybody would pay more that $10.00 dollars a month for unlimted dial up. I use www.Xprt.net I pay in advance for the whole year for $95.00 That's less than $8.00 dollars a month. $7.91 To be exact. I've used them for about a year and a half now and never a problem, always connected when I wanted. I think they give you 5 alias's for email. Good luck in finding something. But do check them out.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
I've heard a ton of bad stuff about MSN as well. Stick to the small guys, you're alot more important to them.
Got cable here, no limits on the speed, never lost any e-mail, it's gone about for about 2 minutes in 6 months. AT&T is notorious for losing e-mail everywhere they are, not just RT's area.
The biggest ISP is AOL, followed by Earthlink, then I believe MSN. I haven't heard anything good about any of them lately. Earthlink used to be good but they followed AOL's demise and outgrew their britches.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
We have used worldstar.com for at least 3 years and have had great service. They are always keeping up with demand. Our cost is $20 a month with two email addresses. The number you can call is 1-800-454-6803.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
DSL service starts at $19.95 a month. The subscriber must be within 18,000 ft. of a local providers central office switch center. Sales reps will usually not take an order for a customer over 15,000 due to cable routing. Earthlink has been hit with a class action law suit by a Portland user, save your bills. If you qualify for dsl picking a provider is a matter of research and luck. I've worked in this business for 33 years, can't wait to get out. Be glad to answer questions.

for a dial-up I have peoplepc.com. it's only $9.95 a month and I don't have email trouble . Rates are going up for newbies after 7/1 so get it now.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
bob b and all others
I spent 2 hours on the phone today and still have not solved my email problems with onemain. They said they would call back, but that was 8 hours ago.
I was told I still need to have a ISP in order to get DSL. naturally that is an additional cost.
What other hidden costs are there?
I heard external modem over internal
and definitly need a firewall.
Who would you recommend for DSL/ISP service.
There are discounts for annual signups from ISP's.
All the DSL's I researched had limited times.
Any info would be appreciated.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
OTS,
I tried AT&T. They lost email and I couldn't access my email away from my home PC. Didn't like that and also had problems with billing.
Now I have Verizon DSL. It is pretty fast and I like it. HAven't had a problem with email so far. It is a little spendy but access is unlimited and we have up to three email accounts. It costs $49.95/month. There is a 6 week waiting period to get connected, a 12 month commitment, however, they give you a free external modem, free pc camera for video confrencing and a self connect kit. It is all pretty easy. I wouldn't go back. Downloads are fast and I can have several windows working at the same time doing different things.
Hope this helps,
Mr. F.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
Truth be told, broadband is somewhat overrated. There are still lots of servers that don't provide high speed downloads. I have Earthlink DSL with an external modem. At the best of times I can get about 1250K, but it's a rare server that lets me pull anything faster than about 150K. And even though it isn't a shared connection, like cable, the speeds are lower in the evenings. The best thing about it is having my phone back.

Re: I need a new ISP - nonfishing
Overrated?? I just downloaded a 172MB file in 20 minutes!!!! Used to d/l songs off Napster in 30 seconds! I don't call that overrated. 150kb?? Thats the problem with dsl, the further you are from the switching station the slower your speed since you're still running on old twisted pair. Yes you share a connection with cable, but if you think about it we all share a connection. You think with that dsl that the more people running into your central office won't effect your speed?? At least cable is designed to carry mass amounts of info. The trick is having a company that keeps the nodes fairly small instead of taking up half the town.
Kinda funny the only people I hear stating that broadband is overrated is dsl customers.
