Just wondering if anyone knows of where we could find someone who gives sailboat lessons out of Newport for 1 person.???? My brother-in-law is dying to buy a sailboat and I thought he might need a few lessons first!!!!!

I used to race sailboats before moving to the Northwest and discovering fishing. I would recommend he take a week and go to San Diego J80 sailing school. I sent my wife there before she was allowed on the boat during a racing event. Hands down the best school to learn the ropes of sailing.

My Dad use to teach through the Eugene Parks & Rec Dept (at Fern Ridge). Wonder if they still have the program, or if there's something similar near him? I would think that it would be easier to learn on a lake where you didn't have to contend with a possibly strong tidal current, one less variable in the equation

I know it's not Newport, but my wife took classes out of Portland. There are several sailing clubs on the Columbia R. but I've never seen one out of Newport at the boat shows....good luck. Maybe walk the docks on weekends and ask someone.....though "ya gets what ya pays fer".

He could learn like I did. Start small in small water. $100 Snark in Sand Lake at high tide. Hobie cat on Devil's lake.http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...hook/hobie.jpg

Macgregor to the San Juans today. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...ook/pjsail.jpg

my dad fell to the dark side of sailing..... stop him now before he spends too much money trying to be romantic at sea. teach him to fish and he will buy a powerboat, all ways be late and spend his kids college money on the "2 tuna lures that we all need"
