Astoria Report
Fished Astoria on Saturday the 23rd with lurker Gilfish. Sailcat was supposed to go but a toilet seemed more important. Maybe next time.
A 49" and 54"+ by noon. The bigger one was released. Only two fish we caught all day. Had to move around alot to find them. Seemed rather slow to me.

Re: Astoria Report
WaterDog, the morning was very slow for me and everyone else also. It always seems to be a better bite on one of the tides in the same day. So with the screaming ebb being in the morning, and so much feed being in the lower river. That afternoon bite was very good, on the flood. We just had a thread on incoming or outgoing, and everbody including myself gave the report that the outgoing was better. So go figuire! The best bite was up above Tounge Point, so maybe in a few days it will turn the other way again (on the outgoing). Good luck.......Bobber Down
Fishing is tuff, but I have to provide food for my family.

Re: Astoria Report
Critters, Critters, and more Critters. I couldn't keep a bait on the bottom more than a minute all weekend. We ended up with 3 yesterday, 44, 45, 47 and one today - 44. We cought 6 shakers including one oversize yesterday and only one shaker today. All on the hard ebb in the morning. Fished the flood yesterday and only hooked 4 fish - only landed one. I took a quadraplegic friend fishing and got him his first fish since his accident, but we lost several also trying to get him into his gear after the fish was hooked. The fish we did catch were lively - almost every one jumped several times and we lost 5 this way - I've never lost fish like this before - guess it was just a bad luck weekend. Fished on the Washington side of the river below the bridge on the flats. Jigged my own bait last night until 11:30 and was up at 5:00 this a.m. - I need a nap!

Re: Astoria Report
Waterdog, I you passed up on that boat scrubbing, buffing and waxing routine of yours after every trip, you could stay and fish another 5 hours. That alumuinum never really goes anywhere, and the slime on it lets the regulars at the ramp, know your just not another doughball out for a sunday ride.
Killer, How does a quadlaplegic do anymore than sit there and watch you reel a fish in? Sitting there and watching is far better than not being there at all, but is this person capable of any arm motion at all?
My grandma has a disabled clam digging permit, she comes to the boat dock and waits for us to get back with her limit. I love the fact she still wants to get out there, but her walker wouldnt do very well in the sand. Not that she could get in or out of the boat. A limit of clams, and never gets out of the car.

Re: Astoria Report
Just got back from a great weekend of Sturgeon fishing near Astoria. Besides lots of fish to the boat and in the boat I met "Rag's" from the board. Final count for the weekend was 5 keepers Saturday. 56, 48, 46 ,44, 43 and a bunch of shakers. Sunday 3 more keepers 48, 44, 44 and a bunch of shakers again and one 8 footer. Took a bunch of friends who have never Sturgeon fished before. They said they have never had so much fun fishing before. Most af the fish jumped and put on a great show. Stayed in 9 - 15 feet of water both days.

Re: Astoria Report
Bait, I wish that were true! No wax, no polish, just a quick fresh water washdown and motor flush. The boat stinks and its blood stained. Believe me, after getting up at 2:30am, the last thing I want to do is clean the boat to mirror shine. I think you boat care technique is rubbing off, well sort of anyway.

Re: Astoria Report
I'm having a heck of time figuring it out. I seem to be able to put keepers in the boat but I'd like to catch more than a couple of fish each trip. With a 2+ hour drive each way it's tuff for me to stay much past 3:00. With fish and a boat to clean up when I get home, I dont get done with the "trip" until 8:00, so I didn't fish all of the flood.
We fished the North Channel and ended up following the guide boats around a bit. Used anchiovies, sand shrimp, squid, and smelt.
Guess there is always next weekend.......

Re: Astoria Report
Hey Rags! I was down there Saturday also, in a buds sled. 1 keeper for the boat, and 15 or so shakers, my biggest being 40". What a freakin' fighter! How ya been? Time to put some hurt on the summers.

Re: Astoria Report
BOE - He does have some arm movement, but it's very limited. He can barely move his hands and he has no grip. This guy was 47 years old when he had an accident and broke his neck. He was an avid fisherman and hunter all his life - he probably only worked 8 months a year. He is trying everything to try to catch fish. He has a prosthetic type device that straps onto his left hand and snaps onto the rod. The reel handle has a long fork on it that he slips his hand into and then straps it in. It's a very tedious process to get him rigged up and he can't set the hook (I do that for him and then hand him the rod), but he did catch two fish - the first two since his accident which was very exciting. With a little work on his gear he'll probably be able to catch fish with regularity again - although Salmon will give him some trouble - you need to be pretty mobile to catch a salmon.

Re: Astoria Report
Had a great time on Saturday. Weather was great. We got one 46 and 16 shakers. All were good fighters. Nice to meet Outlaw. This guy knows how to catch Sturgeon! Nice boat too. I'll be back

Re: Astoria Report
Outlaw...we were between the museum and the bridge most of the day. I guess all the keepers were somewhere else!

Re: Astoria Report
Hi Gary,
Yes it is time to put some hurt on the summers! I bought a 19ft Alumaweld sled so I have been busy learning how to run the rivers faster than the old drifter. Where did you guys put-in when you went Sturgeon fishing? I'm trying to learn all the good spots in Astoria for the upcoming blood bath on Silvers. We still need to get together and do some fishing.
John
