Today's catch- Brownlee
Had a good catch today fishing a 30' break. Mostly crappie with a few jumbo perch and plenty of bass as usual. These fish are really feeding and have been hard to locate and catch. They are getting fat and thick. Catfish are probably the best bet, had 30 yesterday, 3-5 lbs.

Re: Today's catch- Brownlee
Last week was a little cooler than it has been. We had been hitting 100+ everyday and last week was around 90. If this morning is any indication it looks like we will be back in the 100's this week.

Re: Today's catch- Brownlee
Thanks guys. The 2 big black crappie were caught by my dad, 80 yrs old. Almost every time he goes out with me he lands the big one for the day. This morning after he helped me launch he fished from the shore at Holcomb and caught a dozen good crappie, a jumbo perch and a couple bass. Last year he filled his cow and buck tags and this year drew an antelope tag.
Had a good catch of 33 cats today in the Flats topped by a 8.8 lb'er. Left the Flats at 10:30 and went out to the Snake for crappie. Only caught 10 but did get into a few more of those huge perch. No big #'s on the perch yet but they are showing up in lots of different spots. I'm looking for a good late summer/ fall season on those.

I will be over to Huntington on Friday. Hope to find a few cats. Any baits working better than others?

Re: Today's catch- Brownlee
My nephew (11 yrs. old), from Portland will be visiting me here in La Grande this weekend. I've made several trips to Holcomb this summer with excellent luck with the cats. I've been using cut bait (crappie, bluegill, perch, trout) and am curious if you have any advice on what else to use. I usually rent a boat from Bob at Richland Boat Rentals. I always head up to the flats and find the channel or just go up into the Powder River. My nephew has never caught a catfish and is waiting for the winter Steelhead season to hit again so he can hopefully get one on the bank. We're all set for a trip up there tomorrow night.
Any advice would be helpful indeed.
Thanks

I would just keep doing what's been working. The only difference will be you won't be going up the Powder.

Re: Today's catch- Brownlee
I hear fishing the flats. What does that mean? What is the bait for cannel cats, shrimp tails worked for me last time I went. 10 yrs. ago. How deep do you fish? what time of day is best? Would love to catch some cats. Thanks, Kaygee

Re: Today's catch- Brownlee
The flats is an area of water to the right of the launch in Richland that holds cats during certain times. They will probably take your shrimp, as well as cut bait, worms, stink bait, etc. Fish light and let your bait float slowly to the bottom. If they're there, they'll find it. Any time of the day can be good. Night can be good. Morning is usually the best for cats on Brownlee. Though the flats are good, I would not obsess over them. There are many places to find catfish on Brownlee.

I used some frozen trout I had left over from previous trips to Richland. We had an awesome trip up in the flats. I didn't arrive in Richland until 8:30p.m. on Friday the 27th. We left Saturday about noon and had fifteen on board. The largest being about 7 lbs. We also caught a few crappie.
Be careful if you go up to the flats. The water can shallow out very quickly and you'll be stuck in the mud.
We fished in water from 18" deep up to about 8 or 9'. We caught fish everywhere we went.
Morning is definitely the best time of day. Start fishing as early as you can stand it. 3:00 a.m. would be a great start time! 7:00 a.m. isn't bad either! ha ha. Keep your bait stinky, and oily!!!!!

Get yourself a copy of this years In-Fisherman Catfish Insider. There's an article in there where I explain some things about fishing the lower reservoir and also some info about upper Brownlee.
We followed up the 12lber with a 9.3 on Sunday. Monday we filled the box in 5 hrs with 46 fish with a 3lb average topped by to 6's.

Re: Today's catch- Brownlee
Hey CC
Do you think the cats that died off year before last contributed to the hot catfishing this year?

No, last year was maybe a little better for average size and total catch than this year. We are putting more of the bigger fish we hook in the boat this year though alot of them still get broke off. Just depends on the anglers skill level and some luck keeping them out of the anchor rope and outboard. They always dive under the boat. The power of the bigger cats is surprising.
