Saltwater Rookie - Need a boat
Hello all - This is my first post. I am a resident of southeast Idaho, and an avid angler. But I have never Tuna fished or spent much if time on the ocean, but I have a burning desire to learn. I am heading to Houston in a few weeks to take my first stab at Tuna! I would really like to have a serious off shore fishing boat. There are sooo many makers out there that I am having trouble choosing. I want a boat that is safe and reliable to take tuna fishing as well as halibut fishing in Alaska. Outboard? Inboard? Aluminum? Fiberglass? Length? Diesel? Gas?. Thanks - I am sure I am going to have many 'equipment' questions for catching tuna - but I will take baby steps. Thanks again. Jeff

Re: Saltwater Rookie - Need a boat
Welcome.
How much ya wanna spend?
How big a boat do ya want?
What is your boating experience?
Have you met Chris the Idaho Salty Dog?
Where in AK are you heading to?
And ya gotta share a story with the group before you get any more help.

Buy mine! She kills tuna like nobody's business! Mods, it is originally Corrirod's post, or I'd say to look here rather than posting the link.

Re: Saltwater Rookie - Need a boat
If you're serious about an all-around ocean boat, check out the Maxcats. Aluminum planing hull catamarans, fast, smooth, and stable. Maverick is a 32x10 liveaboard sportfisherman, sleeps 4, 10' cockpit, twin Cummins diesels, all the bells and whistles, with a trailer. I'm considering trading up a notch in size and changing to a charter layout. PM me if you want more info.

Re: Saltwater Rookie - Need a boat
Everyone: Thanks for the posts. I am reviewing the input I get online, and the Glacier Bay looks like a nice boat. The scagit is also a very nice looking boat. Does anyone know how 'small' a boat you can get a diesel engine in. I know the 26foot scagits have that as on option. Can anyone give me pro's and cons on the diesels? I have owned cummins diesel trucks for years and I am sold on power, reliability and economy.

26' with the 10' Beam this is a top notch boat vintage 1972 Bertram. Owner bought this boat last year and spent the winter having everything gone through with several upgrades. For sale due to wanting an even bigger boat.

New radar arch with 8 rocket launchers.
New soft top.
175 qt. Fish box mounted on back.
Trailer included.
New rod holders installed.
New washdown pump.
Digital Tachs.
Large deep cuddy with head.
Custom motor cover padded seat.
New Raymarine C80 Electrinics package: Depth, GPS, Radar
New Gladiator auto pilot.
Very solid well built boat that can take rough water with ease.
$24,800 as it sits or $16,000 without electrinics.
Boat is located in Garibaldi ready to go.

He's right about this one. It is a fantastic looking boat and it's diesel. He's looking to downgrade into a 26' Seahawk O/S. Hmmmm... Taking trades?

Re: Saltwater Rookie - Need a boat
Welcome aboard! Now you are done for! Northwest off shore fishing at it's finest, done aboard one of our Glacier Bay Catamarans or a Stabi Craft a great choice either way. We offer demo rides on all of our in stock models and would be glad to take you for a spin off shore to see and feel all the benifits of our boat lines. You just missed our demo days in Newport on "Tuna Classic" weekend, but give me a call and we'll put something together for you to get a handle on which one would be a good fit for you. So if you need to pm me or just call 503.939.3483 A proud memeber of "Team AMMAN MARINE/CHASE"N TAIL" We fish when others may not want to aboard our Glacier Bay 2680 Power Cat Pro Staff off shore slaying machine. Thanks Bob Aman my friend and boss, for luring us over to the right side "Glacier Bay Cats" FOR HARD CORE OFF SHORE!!! Look forward to hearing from you. AJ AMAN MARINE :grin::grin:

I don't think there is a con to a deisel.... better economy, less chance of fire, more dependable, longer lasting, and the list goes on....... The only con might be the price; they are more expensive..... if you are in the market now, you should look reallly close at the Skagit in the classifieds...... that is an awesome boat!!

Re: Saltwater Rookie - Need a boat
Welcome Idaho mars.
First off ,you will get better responses if you spend a little time with an intro story.
A little about your self so the dogs can size you up .
Your question about what boat will usually start a riot here as there are no two opinions alike..
You are asking a very complex question and the dogs will supply you with more information that you can possibly process .
The amount of experience and knowledge represented here is mind numbing .
You state you are a salt water rookie .
Fishing in gulf waters is outstandingly different than fishing the pacific north west .
Gulf coast water is generally nothing like Or.
More specific question .
The dogs can go into detail about any aspect you want to learn.
Water ,boats fish /gear /tec/motors /fuel /boat bling .
The learning curve is long from a fresh water mind to an offshore capt.
Get experience on other boats fishing the North west .
Get rides in various boat styles and in different conditions.
Pass the boaters exam and maybe take a Coat guard class.
You also posted this question right in the middle of the tuna season,,everyone is pre-occupied.
You will be able to disguss this stuff in depth during the off season...
Side note..
Diesel is stinky ,,very nasty when inhaled and if you fight sea sickness it can be overwhelming.
Personally If I start to smell diesel while offshore I get sick instantly.
2strk isnt much better .but not like the diesel.
Welcome to the dark side..

Re: Saltwater Rookie - Need a boat
Pilar a pusher? You be the judge.
Hello, my name is David and I have a problem. It all started about five years ago, when I started to read Ifish. I read stories by a character named Pilar of offshore tales and tuna carnage. At that time I lived in Spokane, had a nice 18 foot boat, and was pretty content. Soon, I started dreaming of salt water adventures. I bought a 22 foot boat. I took a transfer to Bellingham, Washington to get to the sea. I fish whenever I can, and when I can't, I sometimes sit and look at the water like a crack addict dreaming about his next fix. Glacier Bay Cats dance around in my head at night, as well as the sounds of the clickers on reels. Is there no end to this madness?
Pilar a pusher, you be the judge.
Do I need professional help?
