Default Alcohol on the Clackamas.

Looks as though alcohol has been baned on the Clackamas at Barton and Carver, just saw it on Channel 8.
Good idea IMHO, some people just can't be responsible(sp?). To bad this hurt the few that can control how much they intake and how they act .

It's too bad that the actions of a few can ruin opportunities for so many responsible people. Kind of like when river access points are closed due to littering. Having said that, I fully support the alcohol ban and any other closures that are necessary to maintain our social and ecological quality of life.

From what I understand. If you reserve for a group, You are allowed alcohol. But they don't say how big the group has to be. I heard this on the radio news.

if (document.layers) {document.write(''); document.close();}coreAdsCreate('wnsz_20', 'loc', '100');

CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. - Clackamas County commissioners have adopted an emergency ordinance placing Barton and Carver parks on a temporary alcohol ban.
This comes as a response to two situations that deputies describe as riots or near-riots.
The first took place on the Fourth of July after more than 4,000 people crowded the park. Police say many had too much to drink, leading to several small fights. Police decided they had enough and closed the park early on the holiday.
Less than a week later, an alcohol-fueled fight broke out in the bathroom area of the park. Seven people were arrested.
The ban, described as a stop-gap measure for now, will go into effect Friday and run through Sept. 5. The restriction does not affect individuals or groups currently holding reservations for a campsite or picnic area. The County Parks Department will be contacting those groups holding reservations to clearly communicate the specific of the restrictions.
While the Clackamas County sheriff applauds the move, he knows it will take overtime to enforce.
The Parks Department plans to post written notices of the restriction at Barton and Carver parks.

I see it does not affect those currently holding a reservation. Maybe only future campers.

I really like the Idea of this cutting down on the ammount of litter in the river, lot less beer cans to look at underwater.

Not only campers, but picnic table users. Even if it is only one person! Not sure if it prohibits booze for future reservations, but it only lasts for 7 weeks anyway. Guess they will find other places to get tanked and cause trouble.

Nice that it's only through the summer, I enjoy a cold beer with my lunch when chasing winters and springers on the Clackamas.

$ for the county for sure has any one heard what the idiot tax will be for issued tickets. Heck a sneaky trooper ought to be able to make a killing out there for years to come. How come they dont just arrest people for drunk in public, I think that one is on the books all ready??? they sure seem to be able to tell whose drunk behinde the wheel?? a few trips to the parks in question with a patty wagon ought to send the message.

ok so for years they have been closing off the pull out areas and little spots to picnic on the river due to trash ... so now people all congregate into large park areas.. What did they have the other day 4000-5000 people in barton and carver parks... on a hot day.. tempers will flair without booze when you jam that many people together.

I don't know of any officers who would wade into a crowd of 4000 people alone and start handing out tickets.

they have a way to sweep into rowdy partys and increase enforcement and show force I have seen it done in countless places where these activitys occure -sea side , crusing strips, lake Chelan, and many other places where there once were rowdy spots and now there is not. when its hot and a ton of activity is occuring at the beaches might be a good time to show alot of force and enforce the peace, heck I see them doing this with traffic enforcement partys all the time. Some times police agencys pool tallent for just these occations like the forth and all those 100 degree days we have in portland. Its just another idiot tax. And yes you could get a ticket for cracking a beer and then your the idiot.-some will issue and some wont.

I believe they just banned alcohol in the parks. I don't think the county can ban alcohol on the river.

Don't forget bottles of OJ with screw top lids.
When I was in college the fad at the football game (where beer was not allowed) was fresh oranges injected with ethenol.

We could just build Bars and Brewpubs all along the river bank. Then they wouldn't have to drink in the parks!

Wasn't 37 the one where the state can take your property for a project without adequate financial compensation?

37 was the one that basically grandfathered your right to develop your property if you owned it prior to the current zoning.

Great in concept...very very poor in execution. The states (taxpayers) could not fight the court claims and started letting people do what they wanted.

I think there is a revision that is being tossed around this year.
