Default New Member Umpqua Float Info Request

Hello, new to the forum and relatively new to the state of Oregon. Grew up back East fishing much of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, Mid-Atlantic to the Gulf Stream and many of the good smallmouth rivers of the area, such as the Susquehanna, Potomac and Rappahannock.

In any case, my wife and I have tentatively planned a trip to the Umpqua, either the Winston/Myrtle Creek area or Elkton, haven't decided yet. I have not yet been down there. I fish out of my 15' canoe, I am quite experienced in white water, but my wife is not. My question concerns rapids and whitewater in either stretch of the river that would be of concern to us. I'm leaning towards a float from 4-5 miles upriver of Elkton ("Slide area") to the RV Park.

Also, do those that fish out of canoes/kayaks routinely use drag chains in either stretch of the river, does anyone feel they are necessary? back East I used to use a combination (anchor/drag chain) depending on river flow.

Thanks...Mike

Welcome to ifish....

I can't speak much to the canoe, as I have never fished from one before, but be prepared to absolutely kill them out there.

I fished that river from a boat (drift boat) for the first time in early June, on a guided trip. The guide told us because of the recent rain, we probably shouldn't expect too many fish, but we absolutely slayed them.

Regardless, your going to have a blast and catch A LOT of fish....
