Default newport halibut then tuna question

Next Saturday we are planning on going halibut fishing out of newport. Since we will already be 30+ miles out at the ranch we were thinking of trying our hand on the tuna. assuming the fish around there. My question is to you seasoned tuna vets. Were would you go when you got done at the ranch. and how much farther out before you put your line in the water and started fishing. Any other info you have would be great. We would appreciate it.

thanks
Ryan

Hi Ryan, we have done the hali-tuna thing a number of times. We always do the normal night-before (and am) recon with the satellite images of sea temp & chlorophyll. That gives us the idea for the...general direction to head. Sometimes it's a 2 mile ride; another time it was 10 miles to the NW.

I would bump this to the top on thursday and Friday. Someone will help you out. Between now and then I would brush up on reading temp and chloro shots. Lots of good info.

This is just my opinion butt ....

Do the TUNA! first and take advantage of other hunters. And of course the rules are wide open for # of rods, chum and barbs on hooks as long as you are pelagic. Once you land any other fish you are on the same old rules

1) one rod per fisher
2) no chum

and so on.

The flatties will still be there when you do the drive thru after you plug the boat with TUNA!

My plan is to run out of Depoe catch some bullets and then come back in to the Banana and get some white gold. It worked many times last year.

Down by the chicken ranch you can do Sailor jerries N44 30 W125 5 for TUNA! Just drive right past the ranch on the same heading.

Good luck. And don't pass up fishy water. We got our first tuna last Saturday only 18 miles from Depoe.

Would appreciate some suggested links to water temp & chlorophyll websites as we too are trying for Tuna - Hali - Salmon this week out of Newport. Thanks in advance.

With the SW prediction all week long, there should be tuna at or near the ranch. Possibly inside the ranch.
