Default Question on Newport Salmon?

I had a few questions for those of the salty sort who know more than I do when it comes to salmon fishing in the ocean. That's just about everyone!! I plan on making my first halibut/salmon trips starting Thursday and I'm trying to stock up on all the gear I need before I leave. I have been following all the action lately online and have heard that some are using coyote spoons and hoochies with some good luck. I went today and picked up several 3.5 spoons but wasn't sure what colors perform better out there. THe same question goes with hoochies. What size and colors work well out there. Are they usually fished with a herring head and behind a flasher just like a plug cut. It seems like there are dozens of manufactures with dozens of different colors, sizes and hook configurations. It would be great to have some further advice on the subject so I don't feel I'm dragging the wrong thing through the water. If anyone is interested in being a wingman between Thurs to Sat it would be great. I might leave the boat home on Sat and hook up with another Salty Dog friend of mine for a ride on his boat but probably looking for Thurs and Fri for sure. Thanks

You ask for it, you got it! Here's what to do:

Back out of this thread, and back out of the Salty Dog board, and scroll down just past the Angler's Chapel and you'll find a "Tech Tips" board. Open that one up and start looking at the headings for the various threads. For example, the one by Andy Coho is priceless and if you follow his guidelines you WILL catch fish. There's many others too, all ifishers who have opened their bags of tricks and shared them with the rest of us. I learn something every time I go there.

Go take a look.

Plug cut herring behind a small flasher has always been a killer for me. If the fish are being picky I will sometimes tie some green flashabou around a short piece of straw and slide that down my leader above the herring. That will get their attention. Coyote "cop car" is a killer. Good luck

Depending on coho or chinook is your target purple label or black for nooks and fish deep this time of year 150-300 feet. Coho use green or blue label herring is my best catching baits plug cut both. Coho will bite at shallow depths 10 feet to 50 or 60 and coho troll 2.5 to 4 mph noons 2 to 2.5 mph. Ask locals at stores etc. for any given day.
