Default Diver & bait help

Fished a local river this evening and had several good bites on D & B. The last one stripped my bait but no hookups and I know 2 of them were nooks or steelies. Isn't it normal for the fish to gobble the bait or at least bite repeatedly giving you time to set the hook? Feedback needed. I'm a ol' drift fisherman.

I guess my first question would be how do you know they were steelies or nooks? I know most of the rivers in your area have some monster squaws, big enough to give you a good psuedo salmonid bite. And if they WERE what you were after, and it was only two good takedowns, then thats just fishing. Remember to let that fish bite as long as you can humanly stand (assuming you know you are fishing over hatchery fish and not natives). Don't pick it up until your reel starts singing... Joe

Joe
No evidence to show but I did have nooks rolling in the several holes fished. I thought that was the preferred way but they never made line pull off the reel. You could always take me fishing and teach me by experience.
