Fathers Day cutthroats/largemouth
great fathers day!
I stayed away fromt he Sandy today, although I hear fishing has picked up a little. After a couple of months of getting up at 3am I am now all screwed up and have spoiled myself by sleeping in until 6 or 7. Anyway, I took my 3 year old son to a small creek and a private pond on some relatives land. I dont know the name of the creek, but it is a tributary of the Sandy. There is a large beaver dam on this little stream, and upon arrival my son immediately hooked into a nice trout and had it on the bank before I could even rig up my own rod! We managed to catch-and-release several native cuts, one that went over seventeen inches. Its amazing how underfished our trout are in some places around here. There really are some good sized fish out there, especially in these old beaver ponds where they can feed on crayfish and grow big and fat.
After the trout fishing died down we hit the old farm pond for bass and bluegill. My son filled a livewell,(cooler filled with water) with little bluegill which we later released. While he did this I rigged up with a zara spook, and proceeded to get skunked. I started to wonder if there were any bass left in the little pond when my sone immediately hooked into a 19 inch largemouth on a marshmellow and nightcrawler! I switched to worms and continued to get outfished by my three year old. Eventually I changed over to a silver colored blue fox and started hitting fish off of weedy points. We got about ten or so big mouths, a couple that were pushing five pounds. Real nice pre-spawn fish out of tiny little mud puddle of a farm pond!
We wrapped up our fishing and headed home for BBQ steaks. It was fathers day for the books!
