Default 7/12 CR salmon report

In vicinity of CR buoy. Slim pickings. 3 Fisherman, fresh anchovies & spoons = two strikes, no fish. Saw one silver caught for approx. 12 sport boats. Water temp was 56 to 58 degrees. Seas were moderate. Observed charter boats heading in from further out SW. trailing lots of seagulls. Question: What marine radio channel # is used to share "Bite" location?

Pelican, There usually is not a bite location channel off salmon ports. Tuna is a different story. Some of the main channels for Ilwaco are 68, 69, 78, 11. If you were fishing by the CR bouy yesterday you were in the wrong spot. Water temps south of you were a much better choice down around the 46.05 or .06 line and south for salmon.

With the water turning over and changing every day it can be difficult early in the season to track the buggers down. I'm sure you know the drill but look for rip lines and fish both sides, look for rafts of sitting birds or feeding birds and fish around them but don't spook them to fly off, even kelp patties are cool to fish around. Make sure you have good bait too. We were very successful with just plain frozen green label herring last sunday and ran them cutplug or just a head under a hoochie skirt. We got fish from 6 to 12 pulls out. Green divers, flashers were the trick.

Captain's Log:
  • 1 July- 8 July 2007
The salmon are here. Most boats have limited each day. Some days faster than others but all and all everyone is going home with Coho. Some Chinook have been caught but it will take a few weeks for the "Black mouths" to start the bite.

There is no secret to where the fish are: They are all over; most being taken at the 220 foot depth near the CR buoy. Other days find them near the 180 foot mark. Get fresh anchovies, cut herring, throw it behind your favorite colored diver and you'll be in business.

For those of you who venture out on your own please be careful; the "Bar" here is dangerous and can ruin anyone's day. Be safe and have fun..... until next time..

    Capt Larry
