Default Any places to fly fish near St. Helens??

I am thinking about going out and getting a fly rod and learning to fly fish
Is there any place around here where a person can fly fish?

Thanks
Dustin

I take it the sturgeon fishing didn't pan out. Or are you just changing methods for fishing. Can you fly fish from a boat

Anyway, I personnally don't know, but I have seen a few up at Hagg lake (mabey just practicing). I am not a fly guy yet. The equipment seems a little expensive. I have helped with design on production on some $600.00 reel. WOW. . I can't afford them.

Good luck in your search. Thought I'd roll it to the top for you.

Check out the current issue of STS. They have a cheesy little article about fishing for sturgeon with a fly. Looks more like a jig to me .

Dustin,
Try Silver lake up there.. It is about 5-8 miles off of I5 going towards the MT. This is a good lake for trout and bass. I have seen some 20+ inch trout come out of there.

Any place you can fish for Trout, Bass, Panfish, and a lot of places that you can fish for Salmon and Steelhead, You can fly fish. The wide range of fly lines now make it possible to fish from the surface to 50 feet or deeper. I was fly fishing in wickiup reservoir last year for browns and was getting hung up on the bottom in 50 feet of water. If you have more specific questions about it, e-mail me. I fly fish alot.

How about the ponds at Trojan?

or Multnomah Channel

Anyway, find a spot with a lot of clear space behind you - it will spare you a lot of frustration as you learn.

Also, I've noticed a lot of beginners over-do the "casting" part (I'm sure I did the same), remember you hook the fish with the fly in the water! You only need to do as much casting as it takes to get it there.

Fly fishing is a lot like golf, I think! I don't golf very much but what I mean is ... there are a lot of things to remember (grip, head down, stance, backswing ... elbow in, backcast - 2 o'clock, pause for oh just a moment, frontcast - 10 o'clock) and if you think too much you blow it. Sometimes if you just relax and let it happen you get results that surprise you - - then try to do it again HA HA HA

Also like golf it is a life-long endeavor that you can always improve at. I've been fly fishing for about 30 years and just starting to feel like I'm starting to "get it."

Try Salmonberry lake. It's out pittsburg Rd. about 10 miles. They stock it with trout each year and any small fly (black gnat, mosquito) will work. There's also bass in their but, they are TOUGH!!!!! good luck
