Re: Any places to fly fish near St. Helens??
How about the ponds at Trojan?
or Multnomah Channel
Anyway, find a spot with a lot of clear space behind you - it will spare you a lot of frustration as you learn.
Also, I've noticed a lot of beginners over-do the "casting" part (I'm sure I did the same), remember you hook the fish with the fly in the water! You only need to do as much casting as it takes to get it there.
Fly fishing is a lot like golf, I think! I don't golf very much but what I mean is ... there are a lot of things to remember (grip, head down, stance, backswing ... elbow in, backcast - 2 o'clock, pause for oh just a moment, frontcast - 10 o'clock) and if you think too much you blow it. Sometimes if you just relax and let it happen you get results that surprise you - - then try to do it again HA HA HA
Also like golf it is a life-long endeavor that you can always improve at. I've been fly fishing for about 30 years and just starting to feel like I'm starting to "get it."
