Re: Fires
As of Friday, 7/13, over 72,000 acres burned, east flank is looking contained, all Malheur forest in emigrant district is closed to public use. Silvies for the most part is locked up until fire danger is reduced. Might get worse as lightning is predicted to be dry in near future. Smoke in Harney county is very bad in the afternoon most days. Also, calamity complex is causing some closures in the Malheur River hunt zone. Archers might want to plan on some other hunt areas than Silvies and Malheur River units, as fire danger is very bad and likely to get worse unless weather conditions help out in near future.

Re: Fires
It doesn't look good for us archery hunters. I don't hunt that unit anymore but i can see the fire danger only getting worse and more closures will follow.

Re: Fires
And if it gets worse, they just may shut down all hunting this year.
I have never heard of the OWF closing a season, but it could be a first for me, and in 50 years of hunting Oregon, and not being picked for a tag this year, they have my blessing.
I look at it like this, more time for me to fish, and I save about 500.00 bucks.
The fires are part of nature, but when they close hwy 20, and the towns of Burns & Hines are in danger, it well be there call, the woods and desert are as dry as I have ever seen them.

Re: Fires
This is from 2006
Salem- With bow hunting opening Saturday, Aug 26th, state wildlife managers reminded bow hunters to check with land managers for any fire closures or restrictions that could affect access.
Active fires burning in some areas, as well as high fire danger in other areas, has lead to some road closures and other closures could be implememnted wiht little warning, Hunters and others planning trips inot Oregon's wild areas should be prepared to be flexible with their plans if they encounter access restrictions.
ODFW does not close hunting seasons due to fire danger. However, hunters may need to hunt in a different area if their favorite hunting spot is the site of an active fire or if a private landowner has closed access due to fire danger.

Would it still be ok with if you had drawn a tag? Didnt a large part of that area burn about 10 or 15 years ago?

Re: Fires
Yea it would be OK with me if I did get a tag, and if there was a fire where I hunt, I would move to the other side of the unite to to bag my what ever.

Re: Fires
We have had some years were we were closed out every where but National Forest land all the state lands in the coast were shut down to the public of course that was before global warming . It could very well happen this year. I think we had about a week and half to hunt. Lets all hope for some rain we can't afford to lose any more winter habitat.

providing they let you into the unit... a few years ago i couldn't hunt an area i wanted to because of a fire burning north of the area i wanted to hunt in. eventhough there was no fire in the immediate area i wanted to get to..they still closed it down.
personally, i would be pretty ticked if i had a harder to get tag...ie: Silvies Antelope that took 10-14 years to draw and got shut out. i understand if there is a danger they can't let you in, but man..what a bummer that would be.

Re: Fires
You guys are right on...it is going to be NASTY east this year, when you finish the summer with 100 degree temps and low humidity it is bad...but when you start that way it is twice as worse.
I remember back in the mid 70,s my son and I were going Blacktail hunting, it was bad east and west that year. It was very restricted on the west side through late October We were Hunting high ,it was close to the end of October, it was very, very dry I did luck out and nail a nice 3x4 that year, It was getting cloudy by the time we left at approx 3pm they were going to close portions of the west side down if things didnt change.
By 5 pm it started raining and I dont think it stopped untill the following June! The last week of Blacktail season it was snowing like a dickens at 3000 ft, So things can change fast on the west side but In my opinion the Mulie season starts to darn early, that is why it can close in many places.

Re: Fires
i can remember back in the mid 80's when the ODFW extended the western oregon blacktail season a week due to fire danger back when they still had a hunters choice the last five days... Me and my both bag nice bucks the last couple days of the extended season. If i remember right it ended like Nov 10ish something like that.

http://www.inciweb.org/ Will tell you about the active fires.
http://www.inciweb.org/incident/768/ This is the one out of Burns.
101,000 acres with lots of the old burn going up as well as new stuff.
There are some maps posted so you can look and see how much you will be impacted. There are some other fires in the area as well so have a look around the site. And remember we are just starting the fire season in the northwest. Its going to be a long summer.

Yep I was running around Seneca and John day over the weekend looking for lopes. Couldn't see from one end of bear valley to the other for all the smoke. Saturday afternoon the sun turned blood red and ash was falling in John Day. Very freaky .. temps near 100 ... be careful out there it's a tinderbox...
Hats off to those folks fighting the fires ..
