Mr. Fisherman, so where might you be fishing for silvers this summer? Before the season starts, I'll bet herring will be available. I know the Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain opens on June 22nd and time is running out. Are you fishing the ocean or Buoy 10? The bait shops near Astoria have fresh herring for the Buoy 10 fishery.

Here is another thought. If your an enterprising fisherman, like I think you are. You can use anchovies instead. Just order some fresh anchovies from Tackle Time
in Astoria and freeze them yourself. Many times they already have freshly frozen anchovies in stock. Silvers love anchovies.

You need to cover all bases and maybe this will help.

Hi Ray, I talked to Free Willies this morning and he says he will have fresh herring there. He says the frozen may be hard to find Go figure. He also says to use anchovies. I do not know how to get them to stay on the hook though we will need to investigate that. Just be sure to give your self some extra we ran out almost every time last year mainly because of all the ones that had that extra fin. Bouy ten or bust.

Dan!

That's right Dan, Willie's had fresh herring for the ocean fishery before buoy 10 opened.

The anchovies are easy to rig. I place the front hook up trough the lower jaw and out the head, some run the hook threw the eyes, run the bottom hook point into the side close to the tail and back through so the point is out the same side as the hook. Just loop the point through. Is that clear? Easier to show you then write this down. What you end up with is a sideways bend in the bait, the larger the bend, the faster the roll. With anchovies being long skinny baits, you get some really large fast rolls, silvers tear them up. When rigging, I like solid tie with two 4/0 hooks. The sliding setup is easier to rig the bait, but the slider can slip and I've had fish break off using sliders. To tie a solid double hook rig, you need to have the bait size down and play with the hook placement a little to get the correct spacing between hooks. Seems like 3.5 to 4 inches is about right. You'll probably want to experiment with this before heading out fishing.

I've already been eating salmon for dinner by the way. Still have some spring chinook left, the best tasting salmon barr none.
