2007 Duck Forecast
Preliminary report shows increase in breeding ducks for 2007
MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 11, 2007 – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) today released its preliminary report on mid-continent breeding ducks and habitats, based on surveys conducted in May. Overall, duck populations increased 14 percent since last year with an estimated 41.2 million breeding ducks on the surveyed area. As a result of winter snowfall and good precipitation, habitat conditions are similar or slightly improved compared to conditions in 2006.
Looks pretty good (even MORE spoonies ). To read the full report and see species specific projections go here:

Yeah! We'll call 'em "Spoonies for Scott." Pintails are down a bit, though. That's bad.
Overall, though, the "they" said last year was a great year and it's up. Good stuff!

When you consider how much the pinnie population improved last year a 2% decline is pretty small. They still have a ways to go but they will not be in short supply around here.
For those of you looking to bag your first canvasback, this sounds like it might be a good year, too. They are forecasting another increase this year at 25% over last year with estimates at 53% ABOVE LONG TERM AVERAGE!
It sounds like another good year for a teal shoot, too.
Every species except pinnies and scaup are listed above LTA. Now we just need the weather to cooperate.

Re: 2007 Duck Forecast
Really though, those are some amazing numbers. Simply amazing.
The percentages above the TLA are stunning. Enjoy this year everyone, because these are the sort of thing that "the good ol' days" are made of...
...
as long as the weather does it's thing the right way as was previously mentioned
Amen to that.
