Default Sandy River report

Howdy all,
Had a great day this morning, Ya should had been there as they alway's say. I landed a 16lb'er, Chinookie. My reel had made it' a nightmare though. It's a Shimano Corsair 300A Gold model. It's only about 3 month's old from replacing the older reel that also liked to Free Spool. The fish Bit and it free spooled and I had to bring the fish in by hand again. At least this time I had good leader and lot's of patience bringing her in. There was another boat that watched the whole thing and they thought it was pretty funny. Had some other bites and a sled came up next to me and with big wakes and broke some mud of the bank and turned it into a real muddy mess. That was the end of my action the rest of the morning. Anyway's pretty exciting stuff. This was a nice hen that had eggs in her. I did the Pro-cure thing last time and still haven't used them, but also not sure if that is a good thing to use. What is a good cure? Or how do you cure them? I was thinking of saving them till maybe the silvers come in. I am also not sure what to do with that reel as well as it had also broken a gear for the level line part. Can I take back somewhere even if I had lost the reciept? Can someone give advise on the reel and the eggs?
Thanks in advance,

Fishermans Marine was very good about taking back the older Corsairs. Never asked for receipts, just exchanged my four Corsairs for some good reels (Curados). I paid only the list difference. You might try them.

Get some Quik Cure at the local Fishermans Marine store. Follow the directions!!! Very important. Go Ollie Damon for the parts and do it yourself. Or leave it there and have them do it. Good luck.........Fishhead Vic

Went to Fisherman's Marine and Suply this evening and Got rid of that Shimano Doo-Doo. Had 2 of those Corsairs and Today was the last straw. Fishermans exchanged them out for an Abu Garcia Ambasadeur 5600 C4 for $5.00. I was extremly happy with the Service I got from Fishermans. They aim to please. I just need to deal with eggs now. I am finnaly also gonna learn how to Smoke this thing. Any body Remeber Big Bambu? I meant the Little Chief smoker. New toys and gadgets, I guess I got to get to work now. Looks like lot's of fun.

Smily,
Nice job on the hand lining the fish. I have a question for you. I have 2 Corsair 300's that I had exchanged @ Great American Tackle in Clackamas. Are there futher problems w/ the newer ones as well? If so this will be my last Shimano's I will own. Please Advise,my 2 Corsairs are only 6-8 months old and only landed 1 fish so far with one of them. I've been out of Fishing for a while recovering from back surgery.
Thanks,
Rick Z.

Drachir,
Dump em'!!! I stated I had two of them. Not at the same time. First the Silver one, then the upgraded Gold "A" Model. Same thing. Likes to freespool on it's own when ya get a bite. I hate bad mouthing products Or people but this is my free time recreation and spent enough money on that product(at least my wife did) and want something a wee bit more reliable. As far as the Ambassadeur's go, well you can do a search thing on here and see what other's have to say. They feel like it's a very reliable and well built reel. And they owned them long enough for me and are repairable from better than 20 years ago. That was the research I did and got on this board. There is a wealth of knowledge here on Ifish. I thought the Corsairs were a good reel. Felt good and smooth but something just isn't quite right for them to free spool. The reel was also not working as there was a plastic gear inside that Broke for the level wind. Anyway, Best of luck,

Smily,
Thanks for the follow up post. I'll go over to Oregon City Fisherman's tommorow, and see what they'll do. Did you exchange 2 Corsairs at Fisherman's, and only get the one Ammbassadauer in return, or did you get 2 for 2 exchanged? I thank you for the help!

Drachir, fishermans is great about exchanging those corsairs. I actually need to take one back my self. Thought that the new improved ones would be alright but they are trash also. Good luck.

Smily I will get a hold of you and try and get out fishing next week hopefully

Drachir,
I had only one of those reels. I originally had the silver one and traded it at Fishermans Marine for a Gold 300 A Upgraded(I thought it was an upgrade). Three months later and this one frespools and Brakes a gear. Garbage~!!
Once, shame on me, twice shame on you. Talk nicely and I think I dealt with Tim on this one. He is a store manager at the Delta park Store. Closer than OC for me. You might want to try one at a time and see how they react to that one. Just tell them it freespooled and you lost a Big fish because of a bad reel. I talked to a freiend of mine who also has 2 of them. So far he is happy with them. I just give him time and we'll see what happens. I am pretty happy with the Abu Garcia and time will tell how reliable those will be. What do you fish for with those reels?

Smily - here's a link to a good cure recipe. This cure produces quality cured eggs.

I think you'll like the Garcias. Had a 6501 for at least 6 or seven years, never been completly torn down, only cleaned once. I landed a 20lb+ springer on it yesterday, never misses a beat. Bought a 5501 earlier this year, same quality. From an earlier post, I seen Fred Meyer had a good deal for about 50 or so bucks on a combo. For that price just toss the rod and keep the reel. I paid around 70 or so dollars just for the reel???
