Default Westport Tuna Fishers Unite!- Sat / Sun Run

We will be fishing for tuna out of Westport on Saturday and possibly Sunday if my crews feel up to a double header.

Any other boats want to run? Please let me know.

TT, I might have a chance on Sunday. How far out do you think? I have a new 19' Trophy. I live in Puyallup so Westport is a whole lot closer.

Good possibility for Sunday if the weather and swell hold. I still have your phone number so I'll try to give you a call Saturday night and see what your scoop is.

The recent shot looks like 43NM to put lines in and troll West from there. We'll see what happens in the next couple of days. Could be closer or further.

I'll be in slip XX on float 5. You shouldn't have any trouble remembering that one.

I am going fishing for salmon out of the Willapa on Sunday, so I will be about 12 miles south of you. I will be bringing the ice and the tuna gear with me if terrafin's next chlorophyll shot shows the break at 40 NM out instead of yesterday's 50 NM. This is also assuming it's a like a lake when I get out there. Wetsand shows some decent wind for Sunday so it might be iffy. I'm dying to get out there, but alot of pieces need to come together. What VHF channel are you on?

By the way, this is only my second post so if you want to check out what equipment I'm running look here.

Are you running the Willipa bar or heading out of another port and fishing off Wllipa?

Just curious.

The boat is moored in South Bend, WA. It is a 15 mile run from the dock to the bar. Fortunately we can do that in less than a half hour because the bay is always like glass in the morning. I fished on 7/1 about 10 miles out around 46-44-88, 124-18-80, and got 3 clipped silvers and a king for the two of us in about 3 hours. That day was like a lake and we were able to run at 30 mph. I'm hoping the ocean is that nice again this Sunday.

TT-thanks for the radio info. I really hope terrafin has a good chlorophyll shot on Friday or Saturday. The S wind and SW swell on Sunday means I'll have to run SW right into the massive plankton bloom off the Columbia that extends out to 60 NM. It looks like that Ward guy was right for once in his latest Albacore news.

Todd, we were looking at going, but summer kid schedules got fouled...

PM me for tele/email and we'll stay in touch in case. Plus, I do know of a boat headed out on Saturday.

Hey Todd, I bumped into you last year when you were coming back from a tuna trip. I have the big gray aluminum with the twin 250's. Earl Averill is my buddy from Snohomish. What time are you planning on leaving the dock ? I am looking for a crew now.

How big is your fuel tank?

I'm in for Saturday and my boats name is fun-did its a 24' green stryper and I should be at the launch at 5am. I am new to Tuna fishing on my own boat and haven't made that long of trip yet. I have Tuna fished before and trying to make it out as much as possible.

I am new to i-fish as well and learning my way around the site so hope this works!!!

If anyone needs another experienced deckhand, I can force myself into going, bringing fuel $$$, gear, knife for carking, scrub brush, etc. Here's my cell # if you want to discuss the possibility. I'm out of Olympia.

Catch And Eat,
My fuel tank is 55 gallons and should be 215 mile range (115 4-stroke). The 19' trophy is very sea worthy but wouldn't want to get caught 45 miles out in a fast moving storm. I have not been out off the coast in Wash. or Oregon but I spent lots of time offshore down south.

We're going Sat. for sure and possibly Sunday. Not sure about Sunday at this point.

Be sure to check the bar before crossing as there are very strong currents this weekend:
GRAYS HARBOR BAR-
853 AM PDT FRI JUL 13 2007

COMBINED SEAS 4 FT...EXCEPT BUILDING TO 6 FT DURING THE VERY
STRONG EBB CURRENT SAT MORNING. BAR CONDITIONS LIGHT EXCEPT
MODERATE DURING THE SAT MORNING EBB. MAXIMUM EBB CURRENTS WILL
OCCUR AROUND 445 PM THIS AFTERNOON AND 5 AM SAT.

Also check it before heading in. I'm thinking we would like to head out a bit later and come in late after the afternoon tide. I'm still formulating our plan.

Your range will change as you plow water at 7 knots bro. That is what really eats your fuel up out there. Your first trip out there you may want to strap on an additional 10 gallons to take with ya just in case you made an error and get further out than you think. The ocean has a funny way of making you chew up more fuel than you think. Think about a fuel flow meter if you don't already have one. This will really help you with comsuption and your objectives.

Pick your days in a 19 footer and you most likely will do fine. Get yourself a buddy boat for your first runs out there. Don't go it alone. You need someone that you can go your pace with. In a trophy, most days will be 15 to 23 mph on the way out there. Getting there with a big boat that moves about that speed would be perfect. That's how I did it when I had a 23 foot trophy. Watch and learn, then kill. Even better, hitch a ride with someone first and learn the trade and then take your boat.

Far as ocean conditions this weekend they look darn good. Just watch out for that bar.

My buddy had the 2052 with the inboard diesel, 80 gallons. Very fuel efficient. He was 3' longer than you and we had lots of picking and choosing to do. There were a couple days we wished we passed (though we were already 40 miles out by then and it wasn't getting any worse), and one day we gave up and headed for the barn affter traveling 40 miles. That was a cruddy 6 hours, round trip!!!

Definitely play it safe and pick your days. It'd be a near perfect day before I'd head out in 19', and never without a wingman.

Another thing to consider is how having 2-3 people on board, 100+ #s of ice, plus however many tuna at 15-20# each (considering you've gutted them) will affect your fuel economy.

Not trying to bum you out, just adding info for you to make good decisions. But dang, it sure is fun!!!!

TT - Wish I could go. I just got my 25 footer in the water. I have a 107 gallon fuel tank with a 350 Mercruiser. i will have to test around the sound for range before I run with you. I don't have the setup (no riggers) that you have...what setup should I run with my 102" beam? the V setup? 2 handlines, 2 mids, and 2 longs on the outer poles? I need to make a trip to Seattle Marine to buy the fixins' for rigging what I need. Any other places I could go?

If any of you guys have suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Until then I will be chasin salmon around the sound.

Some deckhands come fully-geared up, troling rods, casting rods, hand lines, even the gaff

I prefer to use as many rods as possible, in lieu of handlines. Handlines are great for meat and adding splash to the water, but there's no fight. Plus, I've never heard the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZing from a handline

I think I'm sticking with salmon fishing this Sunday . The Willapa bar will be a bi### with the huge ebb in the morning and I'd have to wait until after slack (9ish) to head out. Also, there are no decent chloro shots lately and I don't want to run 50 miles (my maximum range) to green water.

TT- are you going next Saturday 7/21? If the ocean stays nice, I'm making a run for sure because of the early high slack.

Cornfed,

The best place around Seattle is by far Seattle Marine. Also, just because you may not see what you're looking for on the rack make sure you ask because they have a hidden room full of hooks, clones etc for commercial guys and they'll take you in there to load up.

Not sure about next week yet. Will watch the weather patterns. My wife will be gone, so I may have to go and play.

Temp charts look good to the nw and the SW from Westport. Where we headed? My guess is S, but we need to get this sorted.

Also, any recent charter or commi reports?
