Re: First Ripe Tomato
We had our first cheery tomato on the 4th, Sweet Million, picked our first big one yesterday, Early Girl, lots more soon.
This looks like a very good tomato year.

Re: First Ripe Tomato
I have one ripe cherry and a couple early girls a few days out. I must have at least a hundred green ones in the garden on about 10 plants, maybe more? Couple weeks and I'll be wading in tomatoes!
Since were on the subject, what is your own best producing variety? We had great results last year with a Julianne grape variety. It produced buckets of medium-small fruits all the way into October (first frost).
This year we planted one early-cascade, 4 early girls, 2 juliannes, 1 roma, 1 sweet million cherry, 1 patio and a few volunteer plants that sprouted alond my walk-way about a month ago(maybe the dog dropped a fruit out there?). Those are still small and they just started blooming.

EWWWW!!! GROSS!!!! You guys actually eat those slimy snotty things??? SICK!!! Those things look like some elephant blew his nose in them!!! The only thing they are good for is for lobbing them over into your 9 year younger brothers fort he built in the field across from dad's garden. (I swear, I had nothing to do with it!)

Re: First Ripe Tomato
My wife owns a seed Company so I might be a bit biased. You might see her display in Fred Meyers, she is Newdimensionseed, add a dot com if you are curious.
Hard to pick a favorite. Have some that are mid sized, self seeding, good flavored, with a water resistant skin that are well adapted to the area. We named them after my 90 YO aunt as they have been growing on her farm for many, many years.

Don't make me send her over there, she's a viking by the name of Marie. We've had ripe ones since March. Looks like we have around 100 plants this year.

Re: First Ripe Tomato
I normally grow 20+ tomato plants but downsized the garden this year and only planted eight tomatoes, one each of eight varieties.
Last week I had a nice big Cherokee Purple turning color, and was getting ready for some BLT's, then discovered my young Golden retriever out on the lawn happily munching away on my tomato. Had to laugh 'cause when he saw he'd been "busted" he grabbed the biggest piece of fruit and bolted.
A couple days ago I had an Anna Russian turning color, so I picked it and put it in the kitchen to ripen. I'm not sharin' with Riley until there's too many for me.
I expect the same contest over the grape crop. Last Fall he stole every bunch within reach before I caught on.
Mike

Re: First Ripe Tomato
In the last few years I've grown many types of heirloom tomatoes, and the favorite at our house is the Black Prince. They are a medium sized tomatoe; very unusual because when you cut one open it will be very dark inside. Sort of a purplish black color. And by far the best tasting tomato I've ever had. This year I didn't mess around with other varieties - all ten tomato plants are Black Prince.

I may not ever get to taste ours. The lab keeps harvesting them before I can.

Hey Steve... is it that new liquid fertilizer you got that ripened them up so fast?

Re: First Ripe Tomato
For nearly twenty years I was able to have a garden and my all time favorite was Beef Steaks ,large and flaverful.
Now a question,, where is there a place that I can buy mators at a decent price ??????????????( not the typ. fruit stand price )when they are ripe.
The wife and I buy about 20 pounds at a time just for table fare, and none go to waist except my waist.
Hard to wait for them M M GOOD.
DAB
PS -- If you have any you want to give away-- give me a PM -- I'll even come over and pick them... when I had a garden 75' X 100' we always had extra and we would tell people they could have some if they came over and picked it themselves, but they were all to lazy, they would take all I had if it was already picked and boxed.
