Balloons + lawn chair = fun flight
Oregon man experiences air travel in lawn chair
Last weekend, Bend gas station owner Kent Couch fulfilled his dream and traveled by lawn chair, suspended from 105 balloons, across Oregon.

Re: Balloons + lawn chair = fun flight
There is a pretty cute movie out about a guy in Australia that does this. It's called "Danny Deck Chair" or something like that. I think it would be fun to try as long as you had a good parachute.

Part of me wants to call the guys "nuts" that try this, but I really admire them. They truly have the guts to try something that has to be a thrill and an experience they will forever remember.

Re: Balloons + lawn chair = fun flight
Reading that, I thought how nutty, why wouldn't he just get a hot air balloon...
But then I realized it's different.
A hot air balloon has a burner and it makes a heck of a racket. Floating under those balloons with virtually no noise at all, no wind, no directional control, except up and down...
Gives me chills. Hats off to Mr. Couch!

Re: Balloons + lawn chair = fun flight
Interesting things happen to balloons as they rise...
First the air becomes thinner (less air pressure), secondly the air becomes colder, and thirdly the air becomes less dense. Because of these changes to the air, a balloon will begin to get larger as the balloon rises. Eventually the balloon will get so big that it will burst. If a special helium balloon could be made to expand enough and not burst, it could float all the way up into outer space.

Re: Balloons + lawn chair = fun flight
Wasnt there a kid who tried that a while back? I thought he had a pellet gun with him so he could shoot down a few balloons at a time to bring him down? Maybe I was dreaming.

You will get fined from the FCC if you get caught I think. I seen them do this on myth busters, myth confirmed.

Balloons float, so that's not needed.

Pretty neat until a bunch of rescuers have to fish him down from some high tension lines. Sounds like he was quite prepared, but this is just asking for it.

Re: Balloons + lawn chair = fun flight
I've been around a lot of balloons (hot air and helium), side benefit of growing up in Albuquerque and drinkin' beer with the son of one of the pilots of the first successful trans-Pacific flight. There are one man hot air rigs, you are in a harness with a couple of tanks of propane and a burner above your head. Always thought those guys were nuts, and then this guy comes along. Yikes. Like any other flying things can and do go wrong in a BIG hurry, guess that's what the parachute is for. Nuts, nuts, nuts, nuts!!!!!!!
