The sound of a kid with a fish on!
My kids got let out of school for the summer yesterday, so I dragged them kicking and screaming away from the television set, prying the remote from their fingers, and stopping my ears against the protests about the television programs they just COULDN'T miss. I piled them into the truck and headed out to Big Cliff Reservoir. Ten minutes later they forgot all about the television. In another ten minutes they remembered all the fish we caught the last time we went up there.
We put the rubber raft in and started trolling triple teasers just under the surface. "Keep your rod tip down. Let out some more line." Five minutes later: "Hey! I got one!" For a kid who just an hour before was whining that he didn't want to go and it wouldn't be any fun, he sure had a big smile on his face, and was whooping it up!
There's just something cool about the sound of a kid announcing that he's got a fish, and the way the hands shake as he scrambles to grab the handle on the reel to bring it in.
Sometimes, you just can't give them any choice. TV or fishing? No, just fishing! It's up to the kid to make the most of it, and they will. I'm starting to think that a kid can have fun no matter what they're doing, and if you drag them away from whatever it is you don't want them to do, they're going to still have a good time, no matter how much they say they won't.
Several fish apiece later, we headed home, stopping off at the Circle K store in Mill City for snacks. They were happy. And it didn't take a TV or a video game.

Awsome HB!
Ya just can't replace times like those out fishing with the kids.
I agree, to heck with the TV, lets go rip some lips .
My boy is away with his aunt and uncle for three weeks. He just left yesterday and he's already called twice cause he misses us as much as we miss him.
He'll have a great time though. Their taking him to Yellowstone park then spending a week at the cabin on a lake in Montana. He made sure to pack his fishing pole and life jacket and I'm looking forward to the pictures of him schooling his uncle on lip rippin like a big dog .
I might just have to borrow a kid or two to get me through his lil vacation.
I've got a 18' Seaswirl and the Shad are still running close to the house.

trout? I grew up in Salem, never fished there - you know, always headed for the big lake. Not many people seem to fish there, but seems like a nice semi-sheltered spot for the raft -
They say there are some LUNKER whitefish in there!

Mr. Fisherman,
Ive got two absolute Hell..... Uh, I mean angelic boys that I could loan you for a week or two. My 9 year old catches more steelhead than most people I know. 9 years old, 165 lbs, 5'2" size 10 shoe. We got him signed up for his first year of football this fall. MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. All the kids at school are being really nice to him since they found out he is going to be playing football.

Muh ha ha ha ha ha ha. Beefcake...BEEFCAKE! Unleash the beast Tanner. Let me know in about 8 years if he needs an agent.
It was great taking my younger brother fishing for chinook for his first time ever. I got him into 4 that day, and he finally landed the last one with the final quote of "Ok. This is the last cast and then we leave." After landing his first chinook (14 pounds), he was so shaken up for about a week until his next trip with me - night fishing for them = Matt is now in the 50 pound chinook club. Trust me,
I fished with Tanner and son.
If the kid plays half as good as he catches steelhead...
