Default shipping schedules

Just a question from a newby type, has anyone ever contacted the port of portland to find out if they can get a shipping schedule for places such as kelly point park? I ask because this would sure make it easier to be out of the way when them big old boats/barges come by.

Thanks.

Welcome tryin2fish, new Ifisher! They actually publish a shipping schedule in the Oregonian, I forget what day. It is long term info though and it seems to change. Also it is primarily concerned with cargo ships, not barges.

What I do anymore is keep my head on a swivel and listen to VHF radio channels, 9, 11, 13 and 16. Most shipping traffic will use one or more of these channels.

This is a great question. It's good to see people using their heads for more than a hat rack.

Fish, get in the boat!

I am a new boat owner and I had never fished Kelley Point until this year. The first trip was interesting. I picked a day with plenty of barge and ship traffic. I bet we pulled anchor 6 times that first day. After a while you figure out where you can be without being disturbed so often. You get pretty good at avoiding the barge traffic, but when a ship decides to pull in or out of T6, just about everyone needs to move. I have found with the ships going in and out of T6, you will usually have a tug give you anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes warning which is nice. As Pilar said, the best advise is to keep your eyes open and don't wait until the last moment to move. You may be risking your life.

It's much better up at terminal 6. For that matter, Frenchman's Bar, just down river. I too notice alot of traffic going by at the "point".
