Let me begin by telling you the problem. When I turn on my brand new Uniden 525 VHF/DSC it scrolls a message scrolls across the bottom of the screen that says, "Distress Saftey Calling". It then goes to a solid, "Distress". I called Uniden Customer support and they said I activated the Distress (which I did not) and it should reset itself after 5 minutes. It did not and I powered down, powered up, read everything in the manual to no avail. I called Uniden back and they said there was a problem with the radio. This morning I drove from Corvallis up to Oregon City and got another radio. This radio does EXACTLY the same thing. It was too late to call Uniden so I called a couple of the places recommended on other posts. They had never heard of this and said this was a good radio. While not impossible, I find it hard to believe that I got two bad radios. Any ideas out there?
Not a clue what is going on but I have had the 525 since it came out and have been very satisfied. Maybe a bad batch went to the same vendor. I would get my money back and then purchase another unit from WestMarine, Boatersworld or Rodgers and see what happens. If you are just done with it - then check into the Standard Horizon units.

Ok, you are fine it is just operator error/misunderstanding.
When you turn on the radio it goes to "16" which is the "Distress Safety Calling" channel. After it scrolls a few times it just goes to a tag line of "Distress". If you go to other channels, you will see other "tags" based on their specific use. It doesn't have anything to do with the DSC function. You are good to go.

Thanks for being so easy on me. The word Dipstick comes to mind. I just got off the phone with my son-in-law and he told me the same thing. I have to say though, I would kind of think Uniden Customer support would know this instead of telling me I activated the Distress. It would have saved me quite a bit of trouble and a little embarassment. Thank you
