Default Pixie Lures

In Alaska we used Pixie lures for silvers and pinks. I wonder if they would work down here? Anyone ever used them? Or Spinners behind the diver? Sounds like just about anything can work when you are in the fish.

The question I always ask is *why* do all Alaskans only use Pixies???

They look at you funny when you show up with an arsenal of good eggs, Dik Nites, MorTac spoons, MorTac spinners, and Virbrax spinners. They'll damn near shoot you for being "queer" if you even try to use a float and eggs!

"Whatcha using a bobber for, son??? You ain't from around here, is you???"

But yes, to answer your question, you can use all your favorite salmon/coho gear and be very successfull up in AK.

PS. Most AK natives take offense on the Kenai if you humorously call them a bunch of "yellow rod snaggers".

I could never figure that one out either. Pixies were the ticket probabally because of their weight to get down to the fish. As far as the Keni goes from May until the end of July you can have it. (with exception of the Reds)But come August and September I love it (or did its been about 6 years since I have been up there). Big silvers just mouthing the eggs off your line. Light tackle and because of the cold weather and rain you have the thing all to yourselfs. Now lets talk about bobbers, never thought I would use one but as you know the last two years have been brutal for us up river fisherman. I have had to resort to tide water for my nooks. This is my least favorite way of fishing but hey its better of sitting on my sofa wishing for rain!

Last summer we were flyfishing the sockeye run on the East Alsak River in SE Alaska. There are only two lodges on the lower river and our neighbors were a group of oriental folks. We were trying hard to keep from snagging the salmon (which was hard), and kept using smaller and smaller flies. One evening the lodge boat from the neighboring facility pulled in with four of the oriental guests. They had, literally, a boatful of sockeyes, dozens and dozens. We asked them what kind of fly they were using and they held up 7/8ths ounce Pixies. They assured us that those Pixies were the ticket for sockeyes, and that sometimes the fish attacked so hard that they would miss the lure and actually get themselves snagged. Duh!
