5 stand fun!
In the fall I shot sporting clays for the first time and what a blast. I have been wanting to do some more shooting ever since.
A few weeks back I decided it was time to start getting my shooting skills honed for the up coming bird seasons. Well, with everything going on in my life there was not a lot of time to fit in something new. So, since Mitchell's is not too far from work, I decided to try and shoot some 5 stand at lunch. It has been working out great. I have time to drive up, shoot 2 rounds of 5 stand, and be back at work on time. I have been doing this once a week. The biggest plus though is that my shooting percectage is already improving. Granted I have only been shooting report pairs, but still improving.
Yesterday, I started shooting true pairs. Wow, what fun. Some of those birds are hard to spot on the second one. Yet another new challenge.
I usually try to shoot on Thursday's so if anyone has some free time and would like to join me, just shoot me a PM.

Dan Mitchell is a master at setting targets (and shooting them). It's always fun to shoot clays there because the presentations are so unique and realistic. If you haven't tried shooting sporting clays incoming "ducks" at the pond yet, give them a try - it's just like waiting 'til they put their feet down.

Yes, I have shot that station. It is great. Unfortuantely, I do not have time to shoot sporting clays during most lunch times. Once in a while I can take a longer lunch but not usually in the summer.

It's in Gervais which is between Salem and Woodburn. They have a great sporting clays course, as well as, skeet, trap, and 5 stand.
Google Mitchell's Sporting Clays for more info.

Re: 5 stand fun!
Well, I am headed out there tomorrow at lunch to kill some little orange pigeons! A guy I work with is joining me and if I happen to see some Ifisher's out there that would be great. If any one makes it out look for the guy in to green DU polo.

Re: 5 stand fun!
5-Stand...AKA the Disco version of Sporting Clays. Great way to work on presentations without spending 3 hours.
I always loved 5-Stand. Actually more than Sporting. I used to shoot at least a 5 gallon pail of handloads a week at 5-stand. If I was working in Seattle it was Gig Harbor Tuesday nights, Bothell Wednesday nights and Tacoma Thursdays. Now Sumner has a nice 5 stand. And you can shoot under lights.
There was a time, just after the skeet shooters took over Sporting Clays in the US. (NSCA from USSCA) That a lot of people thought 5-Stand would be bigger than Sporting. The Buick Classic was really hyped up and was supposed to be 5 major shoots around the country culminating in a shoot where a car would be the grand prize.
Somewhere around shoot #3 it fizzled and went away. That was in the late 80's/early 90's.
I have shot 5 stand at The Nationals in San Antonio a couple of times and other big shoots. I thought it was some of the most fun I'd had with a shotgun (except flyers)
In SA there are 4 fields that you shoot straight through from 1 to 4. Each field has 7 traps. So in a space of about an hour you had shot 4 fields, 20 stations, 32 traps, and by the time you get to field 4 you are trying to remember if the 2/5 combo was the rabbit teal, or the incomer high house...you are so busy trying to remember your next pair and which one to shoot first, you have a no time to think about it. It is awesome.
Dan Mitchell has brought a quality shooting facility to Oregon with the experience to make us all fortunate he is here.
OBTW, shooting true pairs is the best way to learn to shoot each pair front ways and backways and handle the different looks.
Have fun.

You are only allowed to load 2 shells into your gun on the course. Every station has two throwers. You get one look at each station, 13 stations. When I shoot a round of 100 I shoot the look birds so I shoot 113 shells. I split the looks with who ever I am shooting with. I hope this helps.
I went out today at lunch and shot awful. Started out shooting to rounds of skeet then one round of 5 stand. It was still very fun but I have shot better.

Re: 5 stand fun!
Thanks for the info, so do you launch the birds yourself at each station or does somebody go around with you to all the stations to do the launching?

For sporting clays it is best to have someone with you to launch for each other. For 5 stand an employee of the club launches for you.
Try it, it is a blast.

Re: 5 stand fun!
Sounds great i should head down there and check it out, what kind of shells and choke are you using? I assume at some point before the season it might be a good idea to practice with a couple of the actual duck loads you use?

They required you to use low base shells target or light game loads. I think there is a restriction on shot size, also. I usually shoot size 7 or 7 1/2. For skeet and 5 stand I usually shoot an IC and for sporting clays I will shoot a mod. I probably should shoot IC for those also but that is what I prefer. So, really it is a matter of preferance. The guy I shot with yesterday shot a skeet choke while shooting skeet then switched to IC for 5 stand.
I am not sure if there any gun clubs around that allow hunting loads. Does any one else know?
