Default Oil/Water/Fuel Filter. The aftermath.........

Much thanks to all the helpful tips and prompt responses on my post asking about the right oil filter for my powerplant.

After fishiing on the mighty Hog Hunter Friday, Spooled told Terry the oil filter to use so the next day after playing host to some of my wifes friends , I swapped them out.

The oil filter was cake after using the produce bag trick, thanks Jet. The fuel/water filter was not  It was nothing short of a mess when the fumes settled. I ended up with at least a half a gallon of fuel in my bilge  . As soon as the filter started to turn and the fuel started puking out, the filter wrench got wedged between the bracket and the floor and I couldn't get it out. What a freaking mess that turned out to be. Oh well, it's done now and I'm ready to roll.

I put a light coating of oil around the seal of the new filter but after it was drenched with gas trying to put it on I'm not sure if the oil helped or not. I did tighten it pretty good with the wrench so sealed or not it aint going to leak.

Yo Terry, we still fishing for Springers Friday?

Tacklebuster;next time try removing the water/ sep. gas filter with a large pair of water pump pliers. They are the only way I could get to my oil filter on my first boat. You don't care if you ruin the old one taking it off. Most filters say to hand tighten only 3/4 turn after contacting base. You may have a challenge removing yours next time.Glad you're back on the water.

Use the produce bag trick for the Fuel/ water fileter as well. I had the same problem on the Weldcraft the first change. They put the filter on and then painted the motor so the filter was painted on. Sorry... I forgot about that mess.

Glad you got it taken care of.

Chris,

When I had my inboard I was told toalways remove the fuel filter into a gallon zip-lock for two reasons.

The first you already know
The second was so that you could look at the gas to see if you were actually removing any water. If there's a significant amount it might indicate a need to change that filter more often, or another problem in the tank.

Cheers,
Rick

Chris...

The tide is awesome for the lower river all 4 days this upcoming weekend......

I am game, ready & able buddy...

I will call you tomorrow as I will clear the day with the boss and off we will be on a big Springer adventure this Friday ...

The tide is awesome for down where we talked about... Timing & the tide exchange are definately in our favor...There will definately be some fish moving in on that tide as the exchange is in the neighborhood of 8' on Friday.

OBTW, the springers are closed above I-5 till 3/15 so we have to concentrate on that strech below there...Don't worry about that spot up above...that is another ace in the hole later in the season...

Tacklebuster, next time you change the filters use plain old vaseline on the gaskets instead of oil. works better and if the filter was hard too turn, or get started then change it more often... just some advise from an old parts salesman.. but what do I know

I could not find the "produce bag" trick and am up to my ass in dirty oil. What is it?
BTW, I went to 5 (count them) 5 marine supply stores today for a set of spark plug for my 2000 Yamaha 8 HP four stroke kicker. This is a really common motor - what's wrong?

Terry,
Looking at the tide tables it looks like high tide is around 9:30 or so. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong

I used to have the same boat and motor. There are two filters that fit your 4.3. I did use the short one once by accident. I worried about and changed it after the first use. For 3 dollars why let it bug you.

I found a clean way to change the filter on those tight motors with the filter so low in the bildge.

Loosen your filter with the wrench and then unscrew it by hand with a produce bag surrounding it. The filter will drop in the bag and all the mess along with it.

I hope this will help

Tacklebuster, try an 1 liter olive oil bottle cut in half longwise. Save the 1/2 with the handle. I get the filter turning with the strap wrench and then before it breaks completely free and spews fuel, slip the bottle under it and undo it by hand. The filter on 'Pilar' is way down in the bilge with about 2" space under it. The cut plastic bottle just squeezes under it.

Write the date on the new one with a felt pen and keep the tank full always to reduce water contamination from condensation. Fill it up on the way home from your trip.
