RT & Stew Clean Up the \'Shue - Tillamook Cleanup Soon?"
It was great to get back to the river of so many good times and fishing memories. My first fly caught steelhead, learning from fly fishing great Bill McMillan so many years ago. What was not so happy was the amount of trash along the streambank! RT and I carried out two big bags of garbage from just one small area! I love the Washington rivers and Washington is my homestate but I was appalled at the trash I saw on this wonderful little river! It was terrible! I hate to think of all the garbage there will be this fall when the massive runs of coho salmon ascend this river. PLEASE do what you can and haul a little trash out when you fish. Obviously it's going to up to us to do it! It's not just Washington either! If you can't go to the Wind or Kalama this Saturday then next time you fish pack a little out! No wonder land owners post their land! Do what you can! The powers that be should organize an ifish river clean-up on the Wilson,Kilchis,Trask and Nestucca. We could have a BBQ afterwords at Mills Bridge.

Great idea on a clean up on a coastal river. I've been a volunteer member with Oregon Adopt-A-River and part of my stretch of river that I clean up twice a year includes Mills Bridge. We could do an ifish clean up/fish/barbecue on the Wilson starting at Mills bridge. I can get all the necessary trash bags from Oregon Adopt-A-River. In the past years the Guide Shop has gladly taken my trash from the clean-ups I've done and I'm sure they would do it again. This spot is easy to get to and is relatively safe for little ones. Just need to figure out a date that would work. Any suggestions?

Re: RT & Stew Clean Up the \'Shue - Tillamook Cleanup Soon?"
That was fun casting flies again Stew - first time this season. He has a very nice fly casting touch, but his secret route around rush hour traffic for evening fishing leaves a lot to be desired . ...
The trashing of river banks is getting worse than in past eras, and it's appalling how many guys just don't give a damn! Trashes to trashes, must be bust, if you'd seen it too, you would have cus'd. Good idea for a Tillammok area trash pick up (the Wind and Kalama are getting a cleansing this Sat. 16th). It's easier to do on the drier ground of summer, so it would be nice if we could organize a cleanup and BBQ with a little fishing too in the near future. If we had crews split up on the Wilson, Trask, Nestucca, or wherever it's needed such as the Kilchis or Nehalem, we could meet for a BBQ lunch afterward. I think fishing the first hour or two of daylight then getting after the trash and filling the bags Mark mentioned and having a dumpster brought to the Guide Shop would work out nicely. Maybe we could use their deck or the Mills Bar for the Q? Who has time to organize such a good event? What days do people suggest? A Saturday? Thanks.

Bringing this to the top. Come on! Let's get on the stick here. This could be a fun event and we could do some good also. Sadly there is morethan enough trash to go around. Are you a giver to the resource or just a taker?
Think about it.

Re: RT & Stew Clean Up the \'Shue - Tillamook Cleanup Soon?"
Mark Anderson and I thought up an interesting idea, called the Cleanup Clinic.
Actually, his idea, I came up with the name!
Mark would like to do a jig fishing clinic on a Tillamook river and choose a very safe place so that little ones could come.
He would like to offer the people a day of learning, and then we would clean up the areas.
I think it is an awesome idea!
I am thinking August is the only time I could be involved, however, but wouldn't it be nice to clean up alot of areas, so that when we start steelhead fishing we will be able to approach an area that is totally unlittered?
Plus, what a great opportunity to learn how to jig fish. This guy, Mark, is really very good, and catches tons of fish!
This is a great way to get your children into fishing also.
Let's do it!

PS, Bigstew, I know how to get their attention on this thread.
See, what happens, like me, I read this thread, and thought...
"HM, what a good idea.... let's do that!"
But I didn't hit the response button, because nothing made me upset or particularly stirred me about this post.
So, what if I start editing it out or call people names on this thread?
Ready set, lets' go!

Who wants to gather an e mail list for this event?
Bigstew? Mark? RT?
I am starting to gather one for ODFW help for silver tossing or processing.
If you do it this way, it makes it easy to sign up.
Simple hit this underlined e mail and type I volunteer for ifish ODFW! in the subject line.

We will set a date and just do it. Nothing fancy and we don't need a email sign up. I'll talk to Mark and RT and see about getting rid of the trash we gather up. I wouldn't want to wait until August though that's too far away and people tend to forget so I'm thinking about a date in mid-July. I'll keep everyone posted.

I agree that we should do it soon too. I'll supply the trash bags for everyone and see about finding out where we can take the trash.

The discarded bait containers, beer cans, food wrappers should be enough to stir anyone to action. Imagine going to fish the property behind your house and finding garbage there like Steve and I saw last week up in SW Washington, that should motiviate you.

Stew, you should have seen the Wind River this AM before the Ifish crew attacked. There were line balls that had apparently been pulled from the water that were 5-6 feet wide and weighing 5-10 pounds. The most incredible festering old shrimp too. Amazing what our fellow fishermen leave behind.

Re: RT & Stew Clean Up the \'Shue - Tillamook Cleanup Soon?"
Hey guys, there are a lot of people who post on here from all over oregon and washington each one of them has a home river and each one of thoes home rivers needs cleaning up from time to time.
Here is what I propose. Each month a member of this board volenteers his knowledge of the river fir a cleanup/fishing day... This would accomplish 3 things
1. more rivers would get cleaned up.
2.. people would get the opportunity to learn new water.
3. people would get the opportunity to meet other I fishers and maybe make some great friendships.
Hey bigstew and RT... I heard you met a friend of mine at hathaway park???
I began to notice something about that river this spring. As you go upstream an increasing percentage of the garbage along the stream is from the landowners!!!!
It's not so much the pop cans and paper plates more like laundry detergent bottles and bits of household trash. All of the fishing related trash is below the 3 mile mark and consists almost exclusively of sand shrimp containers.
Anyway what do people think of the once a month river clean up idea?????
Would people be willing to host them on their rivers??? Would people show up to offer assistance???
I suppose since it's my idea I'd be willing to host one on the Washougal in winter. Its a ways away but I think thats when the best fishing is. for summer runs the Washougal is ALL about exact timing. So I giess o volenteer to host a clean up on the Washougal on Saturday December 29. I'd do the end of August but there just isn't any fishing then even though thats when the most garbage is avaliable.

Re: RT & Stew Clean Up the \'Shue - Tillamook Cleanup Soon?"
Okay I propose doing the four rivers in the Tillamook area in July. Nestucca, Trask, Wilson and Kilchis. we could include the Miami too. We could have a BBQ at either Kilchis River park or Mills Bridge. We will need to see about garbage disposal but there is some refuse containers on the Kilchis at 101 boatramp and at the park and maybe we can get the Guideshop to help us out.Mark of First Cast Jigs has offered to supply garbage bags. Maybe a few people can bring their grills and everybody be responsible for their own hamburgers and hot dogs etc. We will see how it goes.

Re: RT & Stew Clean Up the \'Shue - Tillamook Cleanup Soon?"
Hey Rob, ya we met your friend Brad fishing at Hathaway Park. Nice guy - he gave us some custom purple muddlers to flyfish with. I haven't seen tghe park in years and boy has that main hole ever changed! So have a few others on the 'Shue, while some were just as I fished them so often many years ago. The Washougal has a lot of high tech fishing water that is really fun for pocket fishing flies for summers and whatever for the winters. ...
I like your idea for anyone that wants to organize a needed cleanup get together + fishing/BBQ on any of the more fished rivers. All they need to do is post about it and put up prospective dates for guys to sign up via posts for; both here and on Bob's and Marty's BBs. Dec 29th is good for winter steelhead but maybe a little cold and slippery for a cleanup? - and no BBQ. How about doing the 'Shue in the fall when the coho are thick in there? Let us know what you think. - RT
