Default Boat nearly goes down tonight

I was putting the hurt on some shad tonight with Gizmo when a little 16 foot seaswirl with 70HP outboard pulls up along side us and ask to anchor along side us.

The current was quite swift under the tressle near the OC falls tonight. He doesnt go high enough to drop his anchor to get it to hold. The anchor is slipping as they float by us. The one guy runs the boat back up river while the other guy pulls the rope so they can reset. Well either the boat was to fast or the anchor puller was to slow, because they ended up running up over the anchor rope and wrapping it around the prop.

The motor dies and they come floating back down right at us. They give us a warning yell and we brace for impact but they miss us by about a foot. They are floating down river bow first. They dont know why the motor died at this point. As they float by us, I look down and see the rope around the prop. I yell "the rope is around the prop" very loud with a little excitment in my voice and the captain of the vessel was a smart man, because he whipped a knife out, with one hand and pulled the motor up with the other and began cutting on the rope. Gizmo and me are reeling in as fast as we can because it looks we are about to be called upon for a river rescue. Just before he got the rope cut the anchor grabs and the back of the boat starts to go down. I dont know if the partially cut rope broke, or if he ended up getting it cut all the way, but the rope was cut just seconds before the boat would have gone down.

The 2 adults probably deserved a dunk in the river for a stupid move, but the 4 or 5 year old boy they had in the boat, had his angel watching out for him tonight.

It has been talked about 100 times on this board about anchoring. One more time, be careful, and dont end up with the anchor rope anywhere near the back of the boat unless you want to get wet.

Two weeks ago I had a dufus wrap his rope in his prop at Bonneville just in front of me. When he lost his motor he drifted down the other side of me, tangling his anchor in my anchor line before T-boning the front of my boat ... I was able to pass my line under his and gave him a big push which freed him from me ... it could have been really disasterous. I remarked to my buddy that this guy looked dangerous when he first dropped his anchor ... we paid very close attention to him and weren't surprised by his antic, but it sure ****** me off to have someone else's ignorance place my life at risk.

Moral: Being careful includes paying attention to what others are doing near by.

This same thing actually kills one or two dumbheads in our most gentle river, the N. F. Lewis, every year or two. The common denominator is not using enough anchor, then running up over the anchor rope, fouling it on the motor and ending up with the bow downstream. Happens quickly.

ALSO why you dumb asses, and you know who you are, should NOT anchor too close behind known hog lines up at Bonneville.

It ain't SHAD fishin'.

Just food for thought before July and August.

I can say Roy most likely saved that boat from going down by being alert and letting the guys in the boat know the anchor rope was around the prop. Those guys had no clue until he told them.

We talked to them when we pulled out as they anchored in much slower water with a back up anchor. They expressed their thanks.

Point to all out there. Watch when others are anchoring next to you.

If you are in trouble, ask for help and be thankful to those that do help you out...

The only exception to Roys report is the opening sentence where he mentioned, he was putting a hurt on the Shad... .

Want to tell them who really was putting the hurt on those shad....

The Giz..

Oh come on Giz .... I will quote myself

quote:
I was putting the hurt on some shad tonight with Gizmo

"Some" implies about 3 fish in a very conservative interpretation. Are you trying to say, out of the 37 fish in the bucket I didnt get at least 3 or 4 of them?

Dont you remember the part where it was 5 to 0 (in my favor ) when you were tossing the bugs with the 7 weight.

You might have been stacking the poop pretty high last night about being in Bradburys jig book, but that dont mean I was eating it with a spoon.

What do I have to do to get that signature copy of the book, you big fishing celebrity

Did you ever catch any??

OK, as long as you clarified what the word some means...3 or 4 out of 37. Reason you got the jump on me was when you stepped on the fly line pulling it out of the guides making me have to reline the rod . Then saying as long as you are not fishing, I might as well fish with 2 rods while you were getting ready.... ..but soon, the hurt began and continued. I think, giz, the dog fetched more than you caught...

Enough of the kidding...you made a great call with the rope around the prop and that in my estimation made the difference in allowing time for them to cut the rope before the boat went under. A true Ifish HERO....

The giz..

Great, not only is BOE the local "hooker" who has been with everyone, but now he's a hero? Next he'll start wearing a cape.

Of course that might make is boat get on plane faster.

WD: What do you mean start to wear a cape?
Haven't you seen the red cape with the red undies and bule tights with the yellow triangle on the chest he wears...(With a large R in the center.)

He said the outfit was his sons...but come on Roy A size man's xxl is buying cloths a bit big for Jack who is only 3 yrs old....

I found the outfit next to the snoopy rod and reel he has in the corner of the boat...and you guessed it, he said the rod is also his sons.
