Default Tuna Casting

Had a great tuna trip and feel the pull of the dark side. Am wondering if 50 or 65lb braid on heavy spin gear would be enough for casting to jumpers?

What is the line capacity of your reel??
I think that will be the determining factor as your line strength will be more than adequate.

Strength of that line is not the issue.....You really want clear mono when drifting & casting. We use 20, 25, and 30 lb mono......just make sure it is a new topshot each trip. Get a 2000 yard spool of quality stuff...like Izoreline, put 100 - 125 yards on top of your 1/2 - 2/3 filled spool of spectra backing.

I figured on running only about a 6' mono leader but the 100yd topshot of mono is definately do-able. Does the braid not cast as well? Have only used it on level wind trolling reels but love the stuff. Have been using 80# braid for trolling and those tuna are tough!

Jedcraft, Mark Mc has a good system. I've been been using 30 to 50 lb spectra and a short 4 to 6 foot leader of 40 lb fluorocarbon. It casts great and I have no trouble catching fish but, the spectra spins far more than the mono and as it goes limp it knits itself into a hundred knots. I'm going to try Mark Mc's way, since it sounds like it would eliminate my knitting problem.

Braid Twist too much on a spincast Reel, Had #65 on a Peen 6500, & the line twisted to the point you would snap off lures on a cast, I now Have #30 mono on the Reel.
