Which Avet?
I want to buy an Avet in the next couple of weeks but I am on the fence about which model. Charkbait has a 2 speed EX on sale for $319 a killer deal. Is it two big for Northwest fishing? Would a single speed LX or MX be big enough for local halibut and tuna? A 2 speed LX goes for about $380 so the EX is kind of attractive.

Re: Which Avet?
I've got an LX 3/6 filled with 100lb power pro and I love it. It has plenty of line to fish halibut hill in 750+ft of water. I used it trolling tuna Monday and it works great for that too. It was my ideal one size fits all reel.... Although I wouldn't mind another one a little smaller for salmon/tuna to go with my All Star. There goes that voice in my head again. He always seems to get me in trouble. TB

Re: Which Avet?
TB how often does the two speed come into play? Would a single speed LX be good enough?
RGB Mexican flags, planer boards, swimbaits, hand lines. Oh no

Re: Which Avet?
I have a 3/6 LX, and it does hali and tuna great. The only time i use the 6 speed is on salmon and i rarely use it for salmon. The reel is GREAT. Remember to put tape on the spool before spooling line or the line slips due to fine machine surface!{ duct tape or electrical}

Re: Which Avet?
It all depends on what you want the reel to do. The 2 speed EX is very heavy compared to the 2 speed LX, but you'd rather have the EX if you hooked into a big bluefin. But, for halibut, the 2 speed LX is quite enough. It is also good because you can slip into 3/1 to reel up 48 ounces of lead for a bait check or for a 48 pound halibut. Either LX, 1 or 2 speed is quite enough for tuna if you are trolling. But the LX is too much if you are casting anything to a tuna. There, the MX or SX are quite sufficient. Sure the EX is cheaper than the 2 speed LX, but if you used that EX on halibut it is a heavy reel to use for any length of time. However, if you hooked up on a nice 40 pound halibut on the first drift, you could probably handle the weight of the EX as you would only need to use it for one drift. Hope this helps.

Re: Which Avet?
I have 2 ex's and 4 lx's(singlespeed) and a mLx for casting-I love them all(did I mention the 50 wide as well) but the ex's will pull a small boat into the spread. I use the lx's for trolling and the ex on the outriggers to put tuna back ino the spread for more hookups. The lxs work fine but the ex are super reels. Mark

Re: Which Avet?
I prefer the EX'S for when you get a hookup you only have to slow down to 2 knots and click the reel in low gear and having the potential to bring the Tuna into your spread.

Re: Which Avet?
I have both LX and EX two speed reels. I use the EXs all the time and teh LXs almost not at all. In my experience, the EX is the superior reel for the Northwest. The LX 6/1-3/1 gear ratios were designed for highspeed retrieve of metal jigs to entice strikes from Wahoo. I don't see any use for 6/1 gear ratio in the Northwest.
For example, I set the drag on my EX with a scale at ten pounds at strike (gear ratio 4/1-2/1). That gives me full freespool and about 18-20lbs of drag at full. (Running 80lb spectra with a 50lb mono top-shot.) When the rod goes off trolling tuna, I know that I can get the rod out of the holder and push the lever drag to the "STRIKE" detent and turn the fish immediately. A 30lb albacore cannot pull ten pounds of drag for long, especially when the boat is doing seven knots. I demonstrated this to Paul on the Kismet two weeks ago.
Stopping the tuna quickly does a couple of things. For one, you don't have to reel in an extra 100-150 yards of line (and fish) and two, the school is much more likely to get into the spread when you stop the first one as he turns instead of after he runs off.
If you want an LX two speed, buy an EX and I will trade you.

Re: Which Avet?
Oh, I didn't need to hear that they still have some of these reels left at that price - no I didn't need to hear that at alll - LA LA LA LA LA LA LA.
On the 4th I got to use a 6:1 LX for tuna - gotta say I didn't care for the gear ratio. I do like my JX 4:1 as a trolling reel, but have to agree with Hoggemin and Crabbait that the EX is the way to go. Love mine and the Pro 30 I have as well - there is nothing like putting the breaks on a tuna with either of those reels - as for Halibut they are the best thing going short of an electric reel - toss in low and grind em to the boat
