Default Sportsman Economic Impact

I just got a copy of the newest Oregon blue book and thought I would share some of the figures from the economic impact relating to Fish and Wildlife.

Recreational and commercial uses combine to generate $1 billion of personal income for Oregonians.

Sport fishing: Anglers spend $623 million in Oregon in 1996 with an associated impact on state level personal income of about $305 million.

Hunting: Hunters spent about $625 million in Oregon in 1996 with an associated impact on state level personal income of about $315 million.

If you combine sport fishing and hunting that equals $620 million of personal income or 62% of the combined $1 billion that sport and commericial uses produce together.

Grits, Those are some pretty powerful numbers. I would have thought the associated impact to personal income would have been higher.

Sounds like a very respectible bargaining chip during negotiations when regulating fish stocks.

The new STS has an article about the economic impact of the spring chinnok run this year. it says there was a bit over 14 million spent during the columbia springer run, that is in just over a month. Those should also be strong bargaining numbers. Hopefully this will get fisheries and hunting some support.
