KGW news, Part II, Does it matter?
Again tonite on KGW news, Nike runner Alberto Salazar suffers a massive heart attack. A guy in prime condition, who's life is dedicated to a healthy lifestyle has the big one. Is our expiration date already embedded in our DNA at conception? Does it really matter if I carry an extra 30 - 40 pounds, and not worry about what I eat? Why should I deny myself life's culinary pleasures if my check out time has already been determined? Maybe if Alberto had a couple of whoppers floating around in his blood stream, it might have lubricated the pipes, allowing easier passage of the plaque.

Yeah, I think your expiration is already determined for the most part. Maybe he has had heart disease since his teens, and his healthy lifestyle delayed his expiration date. Maybe the years I spent smoking moved mine up a few years.
Now, where's my chocolate?

Jim Fixx, the father of jogging for exercise, died of a heart attack when he was 42.
My Grandma, smoked 1 cigarette a day, was Chinese so she ate all that "terribly bad for you" chinese food her whole life. Never once crossed her mind to exercise...died 3 years ago at 97. I wish I could use that as an excuse but I'm trying not to stack the cards against myself...

Re: KGW news, Part II, Does it matter?
It's been said before, but I'll say it again: glad to have you back, Thumper!
Is all of life predetermined or can we actually affect the outcome? That's one heck of a philosophical debate, ain't it? Doctors, folks who run gyms, health food companies and the pharmaceutical companies are betting their entire income on it. Then again, tomorrow you may be struck by lightning, hit by a car driven by someone yammering away on a cell phone, be diagnosed with terminal cancer or just have a heart attack or aneurysm and be gone no matter how old you are.
Live life like every day is your last because one day it will be.

I can't tell you if excercise will increase the length of your life, but it easier to live you life fit than if you are not.

Re: KGW news, Part II, Does it matter?
I had a very close friend die of a heart attack abotu 12 years ago. He was very active although never "excersized". He didn't need to. He never ate fast food was had a very nominal body fat ratio by the looks of him. Me, on the other hand, spend too much time on iFish and fishing, brewing beer, enjoy a well made burger with cheese and am about 80 pounds over weight. He died at 37. I'll be 50 this year.
He was also one of the most prolific lobster divers on this planet (I still miss your freindship Mark).
Both my parents are still alive at 84 & 85 although both had have heart surgery. My pop has alzheimers (I forget how to spell that one) and seeing him, I hope I don't live to experience that disease.
I thinkThumper said it best.

Re: KGW news, Part II, Does it matter?
Sometimes i think it boils down to stress...
I stay in relatively decent shape, i enjoy every day of my life, i live it like it coul dbe my last. I try not to get worked up about things.
My dads best friend was a marathon runner, he died of a heart attack at 30 while running. But my dad said he was always thinking about what was going to come next instead of just letting next happen.
My dad is 60 now, was an alcohaulic, and has never eaten right. Has been healthy for most of his life, but now he has some added stress in his life and his health is failing. But he was health untill the added stress came into his life.

Re: KGW news, Part II, Does it matter?
Tule -
I think what you say is spot on. People don't realize the physical effects of stress on the body. Thanks for the reminder!
How many stories do you hear of 90 or 100 year old people who eat bacon, smoke cigarettes, and drink beer every day of their life? Seems like most of those that get on the news have a story like that - but they're always mellow and not worried about what those things might do to them. Pretty telling, I think.

Re: KGW news, Part II, Does it matter?
Well, Chummer, My take on this is that is like taking care of your car. You need to do preventative maintenance and take care of it to keep it running properly. The same with your body. You can enjoy food, but just don't over indulge in them, and excersice enough to keep you up,going and healthy. If you don't use it you will lose it. Yes, if you over excersice there are complications. Been there done that.
So, Chummer, I am going to keep nagging your about eating fried foods and McDonalds.
Signed.....Chummer's other half.

Re: KGW news, Part II, Does it matter?
It boils down to stress and how each of us handle it. I booted a few insurance companies out of my shop this year that I had direct relationships with and boy my stress level has gone down. My income has too a little bit but my health is worth it in the long run. I ain't no body's stooge anymore.
