Default Merwin Reports?

I am a bit leary of spending the gas to drive up to Merwin tomorrow, and I heard from the salesman at Joe's that the action was picking up at 50-60ft. Anybody want to comment? It's either this or try one last time for a June Hog.

Id go for the try at the Summer Chinny myself. Id rather work my behind off getting at a 25 lb Chinook than spend a day trying to locate a few pan fry. If Merwin had a better size of fish it would be fun. Maybe next year but Im finished with Merwin this year.

If you want Kokes, I wood try Yale. The are smallish sometimes but plentiful. Merwin is a no go.
Chinooky might be fun too.

same dilemna. I posted an open seat though and I think I'm going to Merwin at 0500 if I can drag my carcass out of bed at 0400. If there was cell reception (there ain't) I'd offer to let you call me for a report early in the morning.

I'm going to start at Merwin, then Yale, and if I feel up to it stop and fish the Columbia at the mouth of the Lewis on the way home. Chinook would be awesome but I like catching fish- that's why I like kokes and sturgeon.

For me it boils down to catching fish.

There is cell reception if you have cingular/At&t That is the only provider that works. They have a tower on the North side of the lake.

That's it. No more Merwin. One lousy 9 incher. Fished next to Adobe Wall for a while, he faired a couple better, but this lake is done for me until next Spring. Only 3 more mo's to pheasant, 4 to ducks. Guess I'll be reloading Hevishot and exploding varmints in the meantime.

I ended up with a 12, 12.5, 12.5, 14, 14.25, took 4 hours. Retied the wedding rings with stingers and that made a huge difference, no fish lost. Lots of *********, I ended the day with 22 of the blasted things between Merwin and Yale.

Yale was really good considering I got there late and had no idea where to start. Once I found the fish I was catching them in less than 20 feet of water but good golly the trash fish were thick there.

Tried the eagle trick with the dead ********* at both lakes and it really worked. Had a bald eagle picking them up at Merwin, and an osprey got one, and then tried the same trick at Yale and a juvenile bald eagle came down and got the fish. I don't think the eagles are tame, they've just figured out they need to watch the boats.

All in all a good day. All fish caught on a green wedding ring behind a Ford Fender, nothing special. Apologies for the abbreviated post but I've got to hit the hay, I'm heading to Astoria in the morning.

Good to meet y'all, stranglove and perfect drift.

regards, aw

Be sure you don't get the bright idea to leave your truck and trailer at night at any of the launches on those lakes, you will wake up to a $600 tow bill and a ruined trip. What BS.

I understand why they don't want people hanging around there at night (plenty of theft and vandalism to go around), but what's the issue with a nice truck and trailer, who paid the parking fee, especially at 10:30 am? Did the camp hosts feel threatened? Isn't it a bit obvious that the truck, trailer, and it's occupants pose no threat? It's not the first time I've had "pleasant" dealings with overzealous camp hosts. Some people have too much time on their hands.

MattPark,

Bummer dude......Where did you leave it overnight and why? Parked in a day use venue? I'd say the camp hosts just did their job if it's a day use area. Rules of the day use area not clearly posted?

John

I launched at Yale Park, we were camping across the lake. We should have definitely brought the truck over there as well.

There are signs posted, I passed one sign (on the main road), and others are scattered around the park. It's my fault for not paying attention. Still a very aggravating situation, especially on a sunday, when getting large sums of cash (that you really didn't need to spend) is not the easiest thing to do

Not many launches I use deny overnight trailer/truck parking. Most don't allow camping or overnight stays in the park, but I think trucks with trailers are a moot point when it comes to safety or any other issue at night. Oh well, live and learn (and read the signs).

We did find a bunch of what I was told was fire bellied newts up there. That was kinda cool, especially for the kids.
