Flying with rod tubes
A lesson learned:
When flying with rod tubes, make sure if you have two, you tape them together.
If traveling with one, tape something to it so that it can't roll.
Several times single rod tubes have rolled out of the cargo area and onto the tar mac. (sp)
Then they get crushed, driven over, lost, etc.
Rod tubes roll. This is NOT GOOD! Make those babies safe and non rollable! Can you imagine seeing your special rod run over by a cargo truck? ISH! Whimper....

Re: Flying with rod tubes
Jennie, I hand carry my graphite onto the plane in a rod sock. Most Steelhead rods will fit into an overhead compartment. The flight attendants seem indifferent and the rod stays safe. Just make sure your rod goes in last so no one slings a heavy case on top of it.
They make rod safes too that hold 4 or more rods. They are square and wont roll and look like an anvil case for a musical instrument.
Jimi Hendrix slept with his guitar so I can carry my fishin pole with me everywhere I go, even on the airplane!

Re: Flying with rod tubes
Pilar has the ticket. I carry mine on the plane with me when I fly back to and from Bama. I have the flight attendant put them in the coat locker or umbrella locker/closet thingy.
Great suggestion about taping multiple tubes together if you have to check the tubes. You can tape an empty shoebox to a single rod tube to keep it from rolling as well.
Have Duct Tape...will travel.

Re: Flying with rod tubes
Hey DanS, it's more appropiate for me (and easier) to fit the pocket-fishermen on the plane than it is for you to fit your pocket-pool table on the plane.
Good luck on your trip, hound. Tell us how you did when you return....with pics!

Re: Flying with rod tubes
Something I have tried that works well, is pcv pipe a 3 inch tub will take about 3 or 4 rods. Just glue on an end cap and screw the other end. With plenty of labeling it works well, fastening a handle makes it easy to carry, and its not to expensive.

Re: Flying with rod tubes
On a mission touched on something that a lot of people do. You can glue some dishwashing sponge, etc. on the endcaps to protect the rods.

Re: Flying with rod tubes
Jen,
You're absolutely right about the fishing rod/tube thng. Most of the time if you start with your rods in your hand and every time they they tell ask you if you're going to check them, DON'T!!! Keep them in your hands until they won't let you go any further unless you check them. In flight to Alaska I haven't had to check a rod yet. Guys that fly a lot up there(Large and small aircraft) tell me that as long as you stick to 8'6" two piece rods you'll have no problems. Another good habit to get into is to carry on all of your reels, and fishing gear.etc. This way even if they lose your luggage, you're still fishing !! What a shame that would be to go on a trip to fish and have no gear because it was lost. Last time my family went to Mexico my wife's suitcase was lost and she had no swimsuit!! Needless to say she wasn't too amused as the rest of the family frolicked in the pool, she had to watch. That kind of thing won't happen again because she'll be carrying it on the plane. If it's something important to your reason for the trip, carry it on !!
Tight Lines,
Getbit
