Default Bear killed with log

Father Kills Bear Charging at Son With Log

HELEN, Ga. (June 22) - A 300-pound black bear raided a family's campsite, and the father saved his sons from harm by throwing a log at the beast, killing it with a single blow.

Chris Everhart and his three sons were camping in the Chattahoochee National Forest in northern Georgia when the encounter happened Saturday. The bear took the family's cooler and was heading back to the woods when the youngest son, 6-year-old Logan, hurled a shovel at it.

The bear then dropped the cooler and started coming at the boy, said his father. Fearing what might happen next, Everhart, an ex-Marine , grabbed the closest thing he could find - a log from their stash of firewood.

"(I) threw it at it and it happened to hit the bear in the head," Everhart said. "I thought it just knocked it out but it actually ended up killing the bear."

Everhart was given a ticket for failing to secure his camp site, said Ken Riddleberger, a region supervisor for game management with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

"We've not had an attack in Georgia," Riddleberger said. "The key thing to learn from this is if there's a bear around, do not have your garbage or food available. If we manage our food, we won't have bears around."

The attack happened the same weekend that an 11-year-old boy was killed by a black bear while camping in a forest in Utah. Sam Ives was found mauled to death after he was pulled screaming from his tent in the Uinta National Forest, about 30 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.

Authorities said it was the first recorded fatal attack by a black bear in that state. His family said there was no food in the tent to attract a bear. Father Kills Bear Charging at Son With Log

Good for that father! I am suprised they didn't give them a ticket for killing the bear out of season in a park. But I think I would rather use a gun. I am not that good with a log.

That dude must have some arm! Seriously, I find it incredible that they cited the guy rather than patting him on the back. The bear didn't learn how to steal coolers overnight....

Now we cant have people running around hunting bears with logs, if he didnt get ticketed it might have started a trend.

Ya know, it is down right stupid to try to manage bears by managing food. A 300lb bear isn't a cub. It learned it's bad behavior and lost it's fear of man. That bear needed to die and the park should get sued for not culling bad bears.

I hope the guy fights that ticket. That RangerRickWannabe was out of line.

But Wow! That Dad must have some massive arms to kill a bear with a log. Thats going to make for some cool memories for that kid over the years.

I would thank God for the safety of my child.
I would also frame the ticket, the cacelled check with which I paid the ticket, photos and news articles.
I would have a "special comment" for the authority who issued the ticket. It would be written on the notes line at the bottom of the check. It would tell him specifically where he should put the dead bear.

It is amazing what adrenaline will do for a person defending their family. Once a Marine always a Marine. That dude is a bad guy

Black beard actually have a thin spot in there skull where there snout meets. I knew a couple of old trappers in alaska that used to kill them by hitting them there with wood clubs when they were caught in snares. Congrats to the marine on one heck of a throw and kill.

I think when talk of a ticket was mentioned...he should have picked up the log again and looked ready to throw it. That is pathetic...getting a ticket for defending your family.

Failure to secure his campsite. Do they give you a special lock for that. I personally thought he had it fairly secure with a stick of firewood. Maybe he should have thrown one more piece at some idiot park ranger. Thats my opinion
