Okuma fishing reels
I was talking to Osprey the other day and he told me he just picked up an Okuma spinning reel, the Epix EF 30. Yah I know like that means anything to anybody. I dont think I have even seen an Okuma reel let alone the epix spinning version. Anyhoo he was talking up how smooth it was and what a great deal they are.
Brief description
10 ball bearings, 170 yd of 8# or 140 yd of 10#. Beautiful finish. Check out the link showing the reel.
http://www.okumafishing.com/products.../epix/epix.htm
On floatilla II I got a chance to look this reel over. I was very impressed. It was beautiful and appeared to be one of those reels that I avoid because the wife wont cut that many funds open to me. Osprey told me it was $54 out the door with tax from Sportco (something like that) in Fife Wa.
It replaced the top item from my fathers day gift list. I hope to own one soon.
I have been to a couple stores looking for it, the only Okuma spinning reel I have found is at Great American Tackle, but they didnt have the Epix, they only had a 7 ball bearing Okuma reel, which was smooth but not the caliber of the 10 ball bearing O's was TRYING to catch a fish with.

Re: Okuma fishing reels
The Sportco he is referring to is in Fife. There's only one of them. They have tons of fishing stuff there. You're thinking of Sportmart that was bought by Garts

Re: Okuma fishing reels
I too have an Epix 30 spinning reel after Os told me about them.. In fact, I christened it today on the Skykomish and caught a bright 8lb Chromer on 6lb line Very hot fish... 3 long runs and the drag performed perfect... Silky smooth! It was well worth the deal, and I was very impressed (my shimano has now retired to a shelf.
Yes, you were right BOE. it was Sportco, in Fife

Re: Okuma fishing reels
Thanks for the correction sinker. Nevertheless, they have quite a few reels over there too and might just have it.
It's an outside shot.

Re: Okuma fishing reels
I love this thread!! I am on Pro Staff with Okuma....the Epix 30 is a great reel it is on all of my spinning rods. Of interest...Okuma is the 2nd largest maker of spinning reels...they have made other brand reels for years and years...In the last few years they have started with their own brand. I use their Classic 200 on my keeper Sturgeon rods for the last 4 years and they have performed flawlessly. Also use the Titus Gold for oversized...
Great reels to discover!!
Jim

Re: Okuma fishing reels
I've seen the Okuma name in some of the auctions but had never seen one of their reels till I saw Os's yesterday. Looked like a fine quality reel, good line capacity and a excellent price. I'd buy one for my spinning rod. Hey Roy what was that line he had on it?

Re: Okuma fishing reels
I'm sold for the 10 ball bearings. I can get them for the members' price at sportco, let me know if you Beavers and Ducks (scary mascots, especially if the beaver has sharp teeth) want to put in an order? I think they are $54.99 + tax, not sure??? It felt like a quality spinning reel and over the years, I've grown away from the spinning reels, but I'll give Okuma my money since Shimano doesn't like it.

It's getting WAY out of hand when your sig line is longer than the comments that you are leaving...

Re: Okuma fishing reels
If you get one get EF30-s which has the 6.3:1 gear ratio rather than the EF30 which has the 5:1 gear ratio.

Re: Okuma fishing reels
Boater,
Unfortunatly there is no Sportco store down this way. The nearest Sportco store that I know of is in Fife.
We're down near the Lower Green. You should drop by and say Hi sometime

Re: Okuma fishing reels
I was amused when Okuma first started marketing their products in the US. Their tag line was obviously translated by someone to whom English was a second language. On all their boxes, it read "OKUMA - Sense of Power."
This was changed the following year to a more marketable "Feel the Power."
Jim ... are parts available yet for these products?

Re: Okuma fishing reels
SailCat - From the looks of their website, parts are available, but I don't know if you would obtain the part from them directly, or from one of their "dealers". www.okumafishing.com
