Default top shot needles?

Been looking for a while for them, but have only found the elaborate kits for hundreds of dollars. Does anybody know where I can buy singles or have advice on making my own?
Thanks,
AJ

You dont need to splice together your topshots.

Just learn how to tie a improved albright knot. Its a great knot and wont get stuck in your roller guides upon hookin up into that big feeesh!

Finest Kind, Meltons, Charkbait are all good sites to check out as far as purchasing offshore fishing gear online.

Sato or Swifty Mfg. are other options. Might even try Jerry Brown(Line One Spectra) down in Gold Hill, give him a call, he may have some also.

I don't like the Swifty needles - the tip is finished real nice, but you have to trim a point in the mono to fit into the back of the right sized needle. 50# will fit into the large needle but not 80#. Burns needles are pretty much gone, but charkbait has a new set of needles that are simular. BOE also makes the same style needle. Problem I had with that style is that the 80# needle was pretty tight going into the 80# hollow - so I had to use the Swifty needle and trim. 80# should really go into 130 hollow, but no time for that.

I do like the wind on leaders - Bimini to spliced loop. Next reel will have hollow main so no more Bimini.

Hope that helps

BOE did a post about making wind-on leaders and he gave some info on what he did. He wanted a set of needles, but due to the growing popularity everybody was sold out.

He got online and found a medical supply company that sold pieces of 6" stainless steel Hipodermic tubing. It is the same stuff the. I ordered them in several sizes and followed his advice of filling the end with JB Weld and then sanding it round to make a nice entry point that is not to sharp..... Works Great!!! Thanks BOE

Spend time and make a set or spend money and buy a set..... what do you have most of..... plus the satisfaction of making something.....

I am going to save you some time figuring it out, and money if you have some DIY skills.

If you look at the burns needle size on this chart as provided by Charkbait

Then if you go look at the hypodermic needle sizes at smallparts dot com under "tubing and pipe", then "stainless steel hypo tubing" you will see hypodermic needles come in thin wall, regular wall and thick wall sizes. The regular wall in the 304 grade is nearly the same size as the burns needles.

Your looking for the HTX-14R thru HTX-20R if you want to follow what I did, the thin wall may work better I dont know, I didnt try them

You can buy the needles in a 6 inch length for a little over $2 a piece.

I think I am using the HTX18R for 50lb izor line mono and 80lb dacron, but I could be a needle size off on that

I bought 3 foot needles and cut them making 6 sets of needles to give to friends, but its a pain to cut clean on the end. I would buy the 6 inch lengths if I was to do it again. I plugged one end with some epoxy to make the needle end, and left the other end open for the mono to slide in.

If you cant figure it out with these clues on the how to do it yourself, then you should just buy a set already made

Good luck
