Motor work stinks
As I sit here in front of my dang computer and think about all you guys (and gals) out there having all the fun...my 200 Merc is sprawled all over the garage in pieces. I'm really glad I've chosen June and July to be my "down" months for fishing, because it may take that long to get the big Merc back together. The wifey's outta town....called me last nite and asked how the dis-assembly was going. Slow...I told her as my youngest daughter just arrived from Oklahoma and I'm spending some quality time with her, and less turning wrenches. She asked me if I thought we should just cave in and buy a new one. Could that be a glimmer of hope for me?? Hmmm. I really want a new one!! Regardless.....I'm committed to fixing the one I got....but if anybody's interested....If I DO get a new one...I'll be selling my jet pump before I get rid of the old motor. I just had Steven's install a 4 blade stainless impeller and rebuild the pump about a month ago... so if you're interested...let me know.

Re: Motor work stinks
The Merc dealer down here that everyone loves tell me that there's a whole new redesigned pump for the 200's that only cost you 10% of your horsepower instead of the usual 30-35%. I think he told me they have a bigger water pick-up area. New motor with factory jet included can be bought for $9995.00....install extra. Or so their salesman says.......

Re: Motor work stinks
Bought a new 200 Merc about 3 months ago...$9995 is the right price...just for fun...call around and find out how much more you could pay!! Install isn't very tough! Make sure they don't hose you on that!
Jim
The new intake with 4 blade SS impeller makes my 21' x 9' sled not have a hole to get out of!! Serious! Plus with me and 4 others...it crises at about 46-48 mph....I love it!

Boater.....Hmmmmm...that's what they told me...."In a box" I think were the words they used. Do you know something that I don't?? Or do I know something that you don't?? I've had others tell me about these motors too...so I'm beginning to think there is such a thing.

OK, I don't get it, boater. What is the purpose of constantly posting with only an 'edit' statement showing?..frequently no post at all??

Re: Motor work stinks
Hey Boater....I've gotten a bit irked too....relax...go with the flow....I hope I didn't **** you off. I didn't mean to if I did. It's just what I've been hearing out there about the new 200's. Just remember some folks here think they're God's gift to the fishing sport. Most of us are all real people...who like to share what we hear and what we know...and are looking for more input and opinions. Don't let it get to you. We appreciate your posts here. I thought maybe perhaps you know something I don't..and was looking for your input.

Re: Motor work stinks
fm, you didnt **** me off, if you look at the merc or yamaha homepage the bigest factory jet they offer is a 115/80, anything above that was put on by a dealer, an easy way to tell is just look at the 200, if it says 200 on it the pump was not factory, the older mercs when they made 200/140 jets said 140 jetdrive on the engine. look at stevens marine homepage under engines and look at the jetdrives, the highest rated motor at the jet is 115/80, everything above that is not rated for jet power. i`m not saying it`s bad to put the pumps on prop engines since they have done it for years but if they tell you it`s factory it`s just not true. just my 2 cents worth of bs.

Re: Motor work stinks
Fishingmission,
You've peaked my curiousity. I need more power for my boat. I've got a 200hp Merc jet with tiller handle that's 1 1/2 years old now. I purchased the motor new just before a jet bacame available for the larger 225 and 250hp motors.
Do you have any more info on the new pumps? How about cost? Is this just a bolt off bolt on application to change out pumps?
And Jim, is your boat really a 9 foot beam? Your top end speed with a 200 hp jet sounds very impressive. Is your motor equiped with the newer pump?
If I can reclaim 20-25% more hp with the newer jet, I'm going to do this. Sounds just incredible.
Thanks, hook

Re: Motor work stinks
Well Boater, other posters can actually get ya down from time to time. Some are crude, some are angry, some egotists, some jump to critcism and some are know-it-alls without any experience. But , overall I think we have a pretty nice group of people here...regular folks that love to fish and joke around, and, with alot of good advice when we combine all of our experiences. Frequently, it's good to just 'take a break' from posting until you feel like it is a positive experience again.
Fishin Mission.....Put all of the old BlackMax parts in a 50 gal. drum. Go down to Stevens and buy that new 225hp Merc Offshore with the big intake jet. Your just 4 big stainless nuts and bolts away from zoom-zoom--zooooom!
...tell your wife that you were given permission

Re: Motor work stinks
Hookset....I'm confused now. According to the folks at Steven's..this new pump has a different bolt pattern attaching it to the lower unit. When I had my old pump gone thru about a month ago..they told me the "new" style pumps sell for $1700.00. But they said they wouldn't fit the older motors. How old he meant..I don't know...I knida got the impression they're strictly for the brand new motors. Yeah...I'd be way excited to pick up an additional 25% more horses on a brand new 200 too!!! Anybody else out here in Ifish land got one of these new units?? Would love to hear from you!!!!!!!

Re: Motor work stinks
fishin m ission, was wondering about what stevens told you about the new power pump, they said the new power pump jetunit wouldnt fit older motors, if so, how can you put your old pump on a new motor if the bolt pattern on the new motors has changed ? somthing is goofy here....

Re: Motor work stinks
Actually, it appears right now ( 7:38 Tuesday Night ) that Stevens is revamping their web site and there are no mercury prices listed. Guess someone forgot to finish the site before going live ... Ooops.

Boater...the new Jets are for the 2001 models. I bought a brand new 2000 model. Does that clear things up?? Hope so!!
