Landing big fish
So there is all this talk of reels getting spooled, garbage can tuna, marlin, ect...... Seems there has bean a few marlin landed out of Westport or atleast SW Washington area.
How do you land one of these fish?
I'm thinking a standard gaff is going to be borderline for a 100+ pound tuna and not much help with a marlin. We carry our spear just in case because I think it could work.

Re: Landing big fish
You're better off letting a Striped Marlin go, the meat is brownish, coarse and not all that tasty.

Re: Landing big fish
The guys in Mexico I watched would use two gaffs, one in the head one near the tail, and a big stick For what it's worth I've eaten striped marlin and thought it was really good also. Of course those were down near Cabo but...

Re: Landing big fish
Good leaderman with a good pair of gloves, another deckhand with a flying gaf, this is the most importantt aspect of landing a fish, ensuring that it doesnt swim away! Once the flying gaf is in, you can put as many gafs as you want into it, hold it next to the boat and start clubbing it, or pull it through your tuna door, let the kaos erupt now, Its so fun killing large tuna that go beserk on your deck!

Re: Landing big fish
Since I don't want to go out and spend 200 bucks on a flying gaff I will never use, if I ever hooked into a big fish that I really wanted to land, the harpoon would be put into play. If it is good enough to land a swordfish, it will be good enough for a big tuner or marlin.

Re: Landing big fish
As far as getting spooled on big fish, that's where a good boat operator comes in. Nothing like backin down on a big one!

Re: Landing big fish
One grabs the bill, another wraps the rope around the tail and pull it overboard.

Re: Landing big fish
You can back down on a big fish all you want as long as the water is relatively shallow. Otherwise if a big fish sounds you really don't have much chance of stopping it. I'm talking tuna here.
I've also eaten striped marlin and it was pretty good. Same with sailfish.
This isn't even an El Nino so I can't imagine that there would be "exotics" off of Or. or Wa. Then again the ocean is very unpredictable.
