Tuna in Coos Bay?
Hello all, my name is Terry and I am a die hard tuna fisherman myself. I am new to your forum 'cause I'm always looking for new friends. I fish primarily out of Charleston with a little time out of Brookings and Gold Beach. Newport is just a little far for me, I took a week long vacation 2 summers ago and spent it in Newport with my boat moored for the entire week because the wind never quit blowing (bummer). I've been tuna fishing for about 6 years and live for it.
I've been reading all your great posts and I find it's really making an impact on my productivity at work (slowing it way down!). My boat's sitting in Brookings right now but I'm running over to pick it up and drag it up to Charleston tomorrow or the next day and hoping to make a run for some tuna.
Does anyone out there fish from Charleston??? I'd love to hear some info. Thanks to all.

Re: Tuna in Coos Bay?
Welcome to Ifish..
If you really want to meet a good group of serious tuna fishers get registered for the Oregon Tuna Classic and come to Newport on July 7th. We had about 400 afflicted tuna addicts at the BBQ last year and the camaraderie is the beyond description...
It is a hoot...

Re: Tuna in Coos Bay?
Thanks for the responses so far. OK a story, well there are many, some good, some scary. I'll go with an old fun one.
If you've noticed my user name, I am female and I fish with an all girl crew. I am married and my husband is my fishing equal but we have 2 little kids so we fish seperate and alternate weekends. About 4 years ago when we were just starting to figure the tuna fishing thing out my husband and his tunagin friend went out after tuna and got into a couple little schools and came back in with 12, our new boat at the time's new record and his friend was jazzed. The next weekend it was up to me and my sister-in-law to break the record! We headed out early Saturday morning and it was foggy as heck but smooth as glass. We ended up running about 45NM before dropping gear. We took off trolling with 2 rods and 2 handlines and after about 15 minutes we had a triple hookup (remember there was 2 of us and my sister-in-law was very new at this). We each grabbed a rod and started trying to make way while I was pulling a hand line at the same time. I didn't want my fish to run too far while I was pulling the handline so I would reel for a couple turns, take one pull on the handline and step on the line with my foot to gradually get the line closer to the boat. In short order I had the handline to the boat, put my rod in a holder, threw the fish in the boat on the floor, grabbed my rod, got that fish to the boat, gaffed it, threw it on the floor of the boat, ran to the other side and gaffed my sister-in-law's fish and threw it in. We got all the fish contained and put away and had a high-five. We started trying to put gear back out but they'd hit as soon as we threw lines out and I was too tired to bring in 2 at a time myself so we just used 2 lines the rest of the day. After about an hour of running around crazy we had about 10 fish in the boat. We were sooooo thirsty we had to just shut down for a minute and have a beverage and rest and discuss that our goal was 13 fish so we could beat the boy's record, we only needed 3 more. We continued in about the same manner for about another hour and a half. We had 24 in the boat (double the boys' record!) and the boat AND US looked we had just gutted a cow!! We decided since we were about 56NM out now, we better just head in. We pulled up to the dock just as my husband and his friend showed up, he looked at us, looked at the boat, saw one trash can full of fish on the back platform, shook his head, and said "Well?" I handed him the can to haul up the ramp then openned the 150 qt cooler on the back and the fish boxes in the floor. His jaw dropped and he didn't say a word except "well lets get started, we have a lot of work to do".
That's still my most fun and productive day (24 fish in 2 1/2 hours).

Good onya. Great tuna tale. I think few sportboats went looking for tuna today out of Brookings. Coos Bay should be good place to look also. Last year we were tuna fishing out of Gold Beach and fished by all woman crew, could that be you?
Cheers,
Mike

Were you in a Boston Whaler with twin outboards and outriggers too? We did fish out of Gold Beach once last year, if it was you, sorry we got so close, we thought you were one of our friends, we were out there with another Boston Whaler and thought you were him then we realized that our friend doesn't have outriggers. OOPS

Re: Tuna in Coos Bay?
That's a great story....
My wife enjoyed the story as she fishes with me and loves being on the saltwater.
An all women crew for the tuna derby...? that could be interesting.

Re: Tuna in Coos Bay?
There is a pretty good group that runs out of Charleston regularly plus a few who trailor in for a few trips a year. We run channel 19 most of the time. Some names on the board are SouthCoast Stu, Tailchaser, and a bunch more that I have failed to name. Give a shout when your boat is headed out and see who else is going.

Yes that was us in Whaler. We had some laughs for sure that day. No worries about trolling close to us. We did wonder if you were trying to snag our hooked fish. LOL We enjoyed the show and look forward to seeing ya on the water.

Ohhhhh, nice to meet you... :o Sorry again.... Glad we provided some entertainment for you.... You seemed to be fishing without other boats. We always try to fish in groups of at least 3. Did you have other friends around? By the way, you guys were slaying them that day!!!

We did have other boats that came up from Humboldt to join us. We zigged and they zagged and ended up solo for most of day. Still makes me laugh thinking about that day. Tuna fever girls gone wild. Gotta love it.

Terry,
Again, Welcome to Ifish and the Salty Dogs. It's great to have another female salty dog onboard. There aren't many of us around here, at least ones who post up here regularly.
Fantastic Tuna Story. I love outfishing all the guys! (and have done it many a time).

Welcome aboard
Quite a few boats go out of Bandon and PO also, depends on the latest SST.
Looks like it's heading in a little farther North again this year so far :frown:
60-70 miles is a long ways to run for a few fish
I can relate to your story, I did a two-person triple last year. Quite the mayhem

Thanks for the welcome, I live to outfish the boys. It makes them a little more humble and shows we've got skills.... Look forward to the upcoming season.

Thanks for the report, I think you're right. Our crews running Saturday out of Charleston and we'll see what happens. The SST's are warming up a little each day it looks like.

The latest SST's are so cloudy you can't see anything. I think we're running Saturday if this keeps up, I think you're right it's a little north but I'm hoping we might be able to get into some water within 45 +/- if we head out at about a 270 heading. I'm always a hopefull thinker...

Good call on Charleston. We had our best trip last year out of Bandon. That water seems to fish good alot. Look forward to your reports. I am off to see family in Palm Springs and San Diego and return July 1st. Leave a few for us.

Hi Terry,
Welcome aboard, great story! Hope you can make it for the OTC, gonna be a blast for sure. We will be down your way fishing windy bay for the week of the 4th with three boats, one capable of a Tuna run. Sure would like to run out with someone down that way if we decide to go for the longfins. I'll shoot you a PM.

Re: Tuna in Coos Bay?
I have 26 year old son who is single and Fisheries Biologist. He was on Whaler that day off Gold Beach. Last night he recalled how out of fog came this boat at 8knots heading straight to our stern. We started laughing again. I think the sight of tuna girls hooked up had his head spinning for days.
Cheers,
Mike

Re: Tuna in Coos Bay?
Welcome aboard. I think you lauched behind me last Labor day weekend at the Gold Beach ramp. My crew said it was an all female boat-which is rare for tuna runs. That was a great day for us casting to jumpers.
We have a 23 t-top Boston whaler outrage. We drive north from Humboldt several times each season on the tuna hunt. What size type whaler is it?? Mark
