Halibut day in June
Next Friday the 8th for one more day of Halibut all depth fishery. Do your weather dance and hope for a calm Ocean. Dan!, Puffin and Pilar are going, anyone else? How about it Wak?, RJ?, Salmonator?

Re: Halibut day in June
Thanks Pilar for the info. I'm REALLY excited!!
Maybe I have just enough time to run out and purchase that 45 foot Delta with twin 600 hp turbo diesels. I really love this boat and halibut fishing is just the excuse I need to go buy it.

Re: Halibut day in June
My buddy and I would like to go Halibut fishing some time, but we know nothing about the rigging and gear needed.
After reading about people fishing in 700' of water I'm wondering what rod/reel setups are people using.

Re: Halibut day in June
Irontrader, I'll bring another old post to the top. Lots of tech on rigs, rods, reels and lines. I can answer any questions you might have. 'No excuses halibut rig'.
Fish, get in the boat.

Re: Halibut day in June
Pilar, correct me if im wrong but I thought they met the quota for cape falcon to florence north jetty. I think the one day season is only for n. jetty down to humbug. I'll post a link if I can find it... Joe http://www.hmsc.orst.edu/odfw/regs/halibut.html

Re: Halibut day in June
BTW, if this is true it's hard to imagine no quota left after the weather we had the first two weekends

Re: Halibut day in June
Yeah well south of Florence or bust. I'm trying to get some numbers as we speak. I thought the cut off was Newport North. Thanks Joe for the info.
BTW the all depth fishery from Cape Falcon North is open all summer. Long drives for that one though. 25 miles out and 20 miles north of Garibaldi.

Re: Halibut day in June
howdy RJ here sorry guys if you didnt catch my post last week on the only area open for the all depth frankly i'm mad as hell.I dont believe the halibut commission has the foggiest Idea of the fishery out there and to further drive the dagger into things the commercial 10 hr season was givin a 192,927 lb Quota either the 17th of june or the 27th i cant remember it was in the local paper a couple days ago, any way if were all nice boys and girls they might give us aug 3rd and 4th for an all depth but first they will have a meeting to discuss it

Re: Halibut day in June
I spoke with a fish checker at T-bay last weekend that said it will open from Florence south to Humbug Mt. in August. He didn't know of all depth season on June 8,9,15, or 16. He did say South of Humbug Mt. through CA. is open to all depths till Sept. 30th.
I don't have a clue about that far south.

Re: Halibut day in June
Unless you have #'s for a spot that fits in between the south florence jetty and humbug mountain that is within recreational distance probably not. At least that is the sentiment that I'm getting.

Re: Halibut day in June
Yes, Rickh75. You could fish South Heceta banks and 'Puffin' has numbers for some of the structure that might have fish. No one I know has any first hand experience there. What I hear is that Florence bar is no fun on almost any day. So I guess that leaves Winchester bay. That makes it too far for as you say 'Recreational Distance', like 35 - 40 miles.
What I'm looking at is some places North coast that are open all summer at all depths. The same problem exists there though, the reefs are all pretty far from the boat launch.
I guess this is how the Halibut commission "provides a fishing opportunity" without actually allowing any fish to be caught.
That's the pattern I see with the areas that are open. Just my $0.02.
