Default Friday's tuna report

Snuck out of Depoe at pre-light thinking salmon but knowing we were going to sniff for tuna. Ran slightly north to hit the bigger temp breaks above the 45 line. Found huge amounts of birds working on anchovie and sardine schools about 25 miles. No tuna there. Continued past the saddle area........again huge schools of birds with dolphin feeding on bait everywhere. No tuna there. Worked west out to the 125 line and then back south. Temps as high as 61.4.............no tuna there. Again, ran into dolphins schools that had to number in the thousands and since they had not seen a boat for awhile gave us some incredible shows. Curved back inside and trolled almost to the 61 spot with no take downs. Wind started picking up and we headed to the barn about 3:00. Ran inside and at Government Pt. saw more birds feasting on anchovies that were actually bulging above the surface of the water to get away from the silvers that were chasing them.

I have never seen this much bait and bird activity this early in the year, so expect lots of jumpers and huge tuna blow-ups in the next couple weeks. If you run for tuna you have to think of at least the 125 10 line for now, another week and all heck is going to break loose on the offshore waters, but I really believe there are maurading packs of tuna in closer..............just really hit and miss.

sharpen your hooks,

Marty

Hearing that there is bait everywhere is music to our ears. If there is feed they will come. And it sounds like it's not just one type of bait, but all of it; sardines, anchovies, herring, etc, etc. That really bodes well for the season.

And while we're on the subject, did anyone notice TOOOSDAY'S forcast? Could we be looking at one of those world famous Tuna Tuesday's?

Thanks for trying Marty.

I bet you won't have many more trips with nothing in the box though. Any day now it'll open up. Looks like we might get some more south winds mid-week so it may help to open the gates a little more?
