Re: Good buy at Fred Meyers
I had seen that last week in the store when I was there. There is no question about the reel being a good performer from what I had read on this board but the Rod looked a litle flimsy. Do you think it can land a Springer? Last week all I seen was the $79.00 price tag and NO rebates. Did you see the rebates for each item or should that be $79.00 minus $15.00= $64.00 for the rod and reel? I think that's for the one with the 5500 C3 set up. Did that come into effect this week? I had been itching for a descent Rod and Reel for a backup, This could be the one!!! Smily

Re: Good buy at Fred Meyers
Smily,
I just went to FM at lunch today and saw the reel rebate coupons taped to the rod rack. And yes, the med. heavy rod would be fine for springers. So here's how it breaks down:
5500C3/5501C3rod and reel combo - 79.99 (after unadvertised in store special) minus 25% (from coupon in paper) = $59.99 purchase at store, minus $15.00 (from mail in rebate for the reel) =$44.99 total cost after all discounts and bebates.
6500C3/6501C3rod and reel combo - $89.99(after unadvertised in store special) minus 25% (from coupon in paper) = $67.49 purchase at store, minus $15.00 (from mail in rebate for the reel) =$52.49 total cost after all discounts and bebates.
Personally, all my springer rods are med. heavy action and the only reel I now use for salmon/steelhead out of my boat is the 5501C3.

Good buy at Fred Meyers
Saw an add from Fred Meyers in this last weekends paper for 25% off rod and reel combo's. They also are having a unadvertised special on Ambassaduer (sp) 5500C3/5501C3 combo's for $79.99 and 6500C3/6501C3 combo's for $89.99. Plus both have a $15.00 mail-in rebate for the reel. The rods are 8'-6" med. heavy graphite 12-20lb, not bad for a beginner or low budget. What I like though is not the rod but with all the discounts/rebates you can get the reels for $45.00 or $55.00.

Re: Good buy at Fred Meyers
Oops, did my math wrong. The 6500C#/6501C3 for $89.99 minus the discount anfd the rebate would only be $52.50.

Re: Good buy at Fred Meyers
Hello all,
Okay, Here's the facts. I went to Fred Meyers the new one in Wood village last night and purchased the Rod and reel combo. It was on sale for $79.00 minus the 25% off brings it down to $60.00. I got the 8'6" rated 10-20lb line Medium-heavy action, and the 5500 C3 reel. They didn't have the rebate coupon so I went to the Gresham Fred Meyer and they had the coupon. On the coupon, it stated that you need to turn in the bar code from the Reel carton. On a combo you don't recieve the reel carton. This morning I called Abu-Garcia and they say they don't offer the rebate to combo's. Therefore my total bill comes to $60.00 for the combo which I think is still way money ahead if I got the rebate back and still had to purchase a rod Separately. I think it is a great reel and a descent rod for a great price even at $60.00. The Gresham Fred Meyer's didn't even have the sale on the Rod so keep a look out where you by. I also think I get to try it out at the revenge of the Flotilla's this Weekend!!!! Smily

Re: Good buy at Fred Meyers
Hey guys,
Thanks for sharing this info. My wife got me the 6501 C3 package. I've been wanting that reel for at least a year now. I love the way it casts and the drag is smooth.
I heard from a fella there that he broke two of the rods that came with the package but it is a good deal for the reel anyway. If ya got one you just may want to take a backup rod with you just in case. He broke one on a lil 12# Chinook and the other on a about a 16# Steelhead, or so I think that's what he said. Told me that they were neither one fighting hard enough to break a rod in his openion. But then he had been fishing Bonniville for oversize lately so we'll see. I want to give it a reel test myself and I'll report back when I have one.
Thanks again, and that was a good tip on the reel.
My wife went back three times to get me that 6501 reel, I like it left handed what can I say. Anyway, she talked them into swapping the reel on Saturday. The new reel had a bar code and I remembered peeling it off . I had to go check... I put it on the rod . Maybe I'll get the rebate and turn that into another fishing trip.
Gotta love that Karma thing.
Thanks again,
Mr. F.
