Default O.K. class....

Welcome back to The School of Ifish!
I see all of you are back into your desks all neat and orderly.
Your assignment for today is to write an essay on What I hunted (and killed...?)over Memorial Day Weekend.
This may include crab, fish, any kind of game... but may not include any hunting for the opposite sex.
Ready? Get out your number 2 pencils (keyboard) and notebook and proceed!

I will begin....
I hunted cutts in tidewater... Caught 2, Bill caught 3. Didn't kill anything.
Went crabbing with some friends, and did OK in T Bay.
Nehalem Bay sturgeon was S L O W, and the crabs ate up all the offerings, so perhaps crabbing might be good!

I was in your neck of the woods this weekend Jen. We camped at Kilchis Park. Nice place.
I did manage to get out into T-bay with a friend, for some crabbing on Sat. we got 6 keepers before it got too windy. Sunday we launched at Memaloose (sp?) and tried our luck at some springers but couldn't keep the spinners down long enough . Too bad springers aren't vegetarians, because about the time the weight hit the bottom the rig looked like a spinach ball. I did however see two caught.

Well Mike and I did a float down the Wilson on Sunday just to see what the trout bite was like. As in the past they are getting bigger every year. The biggest was a 17” cut throat and one that we had to do a little work at so that it would not be left to die on an old salmon set up that was hung up on the bottom of the river. That one my have been the biggest one but it swam off after I was able to get over the top off it in the boat and anchor up and brake the leader off below the swivel.

And once again thanks to TBC Marie and Denis for all there help. You all giot my business from now on come this fall have that shrimp sent and fresh shrimp ready I'll be there

Oh and lets not forget all of those died beer cans that I now got to take back to the store for a refund

Fished the Santiam above Crabtree with our nephew on Saturday - plugged, bounced, and bobbered! Nothing but moss, grass and debris.

We took a drive to Lebanon on Sunday, and watched 3 springers landed just below the dam.

My wife's brother brought over a bunch of kokanee, we tossed them in the smoker, and we're now demolishing salmon cheese balls!

Fished the Sandy today and it is still slow. The water was clearing from the last snowmelt so I bet tomorrow will be good as will the next few days. Just a guess though. The fish are light and bright in the lower river and difinatly worth the effort. The rain was warm and refreshing and we did manage one NICE 20" jack chinook the perfect dinner size.. We got home just in time for the B-Que with friends and family. I love the holidays.

A few more keepers after you escaped, uh, I mean left...ran out of ray and tonic and had to survive on food and water for the rest of the day.

My wife had eye surgery on Thursday, so I had to stay close to the sty, but I did manage to slay a few head of lettuce, some spinach, a few strawberries and, oh yeah, I yanked on a bunch of shad while watching 50 boats form 50 separate hog lines at OC.

As much as I tried, I couldn't get any of my usual suspects out fishing so I was left at home filling out the library of forms that I have to fill out for my new job.

Looking to be fishing next weekend, at which time I will report in on my slayings.

Went springer fishing on the "home waters" with EZ drifter on Sunday. One springer made it into the burlap sack, and two lucky ones got away. The best part of the trip was seeing 15-20 springers run through a tailout right next to the boat.

On saturday, I hit Rogue brewery for the big sale. Came back with four cases that will hopefully take me a long time to "kill".

The dear darling wife pulled my liberty chit for the weekend. Said no more fishn til the woodshed was full for the winter. Cut two cords of fire wood. About three more to go. She did let up a little and might let me go next thursday if i'm lucky and have been good.WOW funny how all your fishing friends get real busy when its wood cutting time.

we fished for lings on saturday by lopez island (san juans for those who don't live in washington). Had three people in the boat and were allowed 1 ling between 26 and 40 inches per person. Managed a 39" (18lbs) a 35" (15 lbs) and a baby of 28" (7 lbs). Since there were alot of boats around the ramp we left early and decided not to go after rockfish. I would have liked to go for some halibut but the weather wasn't nice enough for us to get out on the straits. oh well maybe next week.

Worked on some projects around the house Saturday and Sunday. Monday decided to be part of the floating city at OC. I am surprised the Government hasnt gotten a post office on the river called Garbage Hole Post Office. Zip code 970BS. We were trying to incorporte as a city yesterday, we met the population requirements.

Shad fishing was slow. The rain and wind might have had something to do with it. Good thing Gizmo came along to fill a couple buckets up with fish. When he was cathing shad on his flypole I new it was time to punt. 21 combined fish, 8 hours each (16 combined fishing hours). The Willamette has not been very good to me this year. Spooled, bugleman2u and I floated the Clackamas Saturday for Chinooks or Steelies. We killed a good number of sand shrimp and drowned a good pound of nice salmon eggs. It was a beautiful sunny warm day> Fishing was great, catching was terrible. Oh jeez this was supposed to be in pencil huh?

Saturday: One nasty sun burn and only three legal crabs at Nestucca Bay. However, still had a great time!

Sunday: floated the Nestucca from three rivers to Cloverdale. First hole - after loading my diver/bait setup and setting my rod in the rod holder, my rod tip burried to the water. Five minutes later I landed a nice 26 inch summer steelhead! Beautiful fish. Later in the float my dad caught a jack, but no springers on this trip.

Monday: One long drive back to E. Oregon.

Went rainbow trout fishing out of the canoe yesterday. 3 trout. 2 were at 12" and the last one of the day was right at 2 pounds. It's like bream fishing, only boring and the fish are smaller.

Fished Saturday and Sunday in the Lower Columbia for sturgeon - only two shakers over the two days - couldn't keep the crabs away and got too windy to keep the boat straight on Sunday. Killed my stern anchor rope when I forgot it was out and took off full throttle. Made a loud snap and 40 lb. pyramid now rests in peace on the bottom of Baker bay. I think I almost got it up and skiing before the rope broke! I performed my good deed for the year by pulling someone off a sand bar on the way back in to Chinook. If it wasn't such a miserable day I'd have probably left them - I almost got stuck getting over to them. Nice guy - even offered to pay me - I should have asked him if he had a stern anchor...

I'm jealous of you all......I was on vacation last week...hit the Columbia near Washougal on Monday...and my 200 Merc deficated on me. No...really...broke a piston...looks like I'll be in the lineup at Steven's getting a new 200 very soon. Kept looking at the driftboat thinkin' I ought to have been on the Clackamas river hunting springers. So...I decided that while the boat was "down"..I'd re-do the interior. I installed some mising trim, did the spray on bedliner thing (So now I'm your "Official Guinea Pig"), and installed some new carpet on the floor of the sled. My 18 year old sled looks like new again!! Regardless...I got all those things done that I should have been doing while I was out there on the Columbia salmon fishing. I can rest easy now....and as soon as I get another motor ($$OUCH$$$) I'll be back in action.

Struck out on a crabbing trip with my 9-year old son Monday. First we got delayed over an hour on the highway to Tillamook due to a car accident, which meant we missed the tide. Then when we got over the hill, it was raining hard...we cut our losses and went home. Can't win 'em all.

Hello fellow fishers,
This is my first post on this board, or any board for that matter, so please indulge me. This is a wonderful topic, and I couldn't resist a reply. Sunday morning early, I took off with boat in tow to North Fork Resevoir to take my niece trout fishing.. Had Wife, oldest son, grand daughter, niece, and myself in the boat. Was a little stressful but my wife and son helped me out a lot and the kids had a blast.
Monday afternoon I took my oldest son and a nephew to Oregon City for shad. They had a blast catching those things as well. Didn't break anything on the boat which I always consider a great success. It was a great weekend for me.
I really enjoyed reading about everyone's trips.

Well I did work on Kalama river property, mostly the lawn, on sat was working on sun. Spent monday with my girlfriend. Went fishing today, now have a cooler full of shad for the guys at the station for crabbing. Had a lot of fun today, hooked over 100 between my partner and I. we only landed a little over 50 though. Was still a blast.

We went to Fort Stevens State park for the weekend. Sunday fished with Mark Charlton. We went up above the Astoria bridge. Hooked 15, 5 keepers. These are the fattest fish I have ever seen! We opened up one fish and It had 38 anchovies in its stomach. I don't know what it was going to do with the one it ate.

Sunday- More kids fishing. There first time in a boat and they were scared to death. By the end of the day I couldn't go fast enough.
Plus one keeper sturgeon in the boat.

Monday - same drill more shad. Great weekend.

How many of those dimpled hanging chads you need?

Just a couple of the many uses for shad:
wheel chocks
door stops
roofing
siding

Friday: Drove over the hill to Crane Prairie. Sat in the boat and itched for a twitch. Got one twitch all day.

Saturday Morning: Got up early, sat in the boat all morning itching for some twitching in the microlight. No twitching in the morning, took 2 of the tribe to the dam and laid up a half a gunnysack of bluegills and largemouth.

Saturday Afternoon: Took a couple different kids out for trout in the trees again. Holding the microlight again. It twitched. I yanked. Fish yanked harder. Fingers slipped.
Rod overboard. 21 inch trout dancing all over the water while I search for a big treble hook in by trout gear box. Found a buzz bomb and a hook and after several slow drags along the bottom I had the line. A little girl hand-lined in her first trout, and I got my pole back.

Sunday: A whole lotta itchin' for very little twitchin'.
